CO2 Flooding System Calculation Guide

The document outlines the calculations for a CO₂ flooding system based on IS 6384 and NFPA 12 standards, detailing the required mass flow rate and discharge specifications. It specifies that a total of 19.125 kg of CO₂ must be discharged in one minute through four nozzles, each requiring an orifice diameter of approximately 1.2 mm. Additionally, it includes calculations for pressure drops over a 30m pipe with bends, indicating potential choked flow conditions at the nozzles.

CO₂ Flooding System Calcula on as per IS 6384 & NFPA 12

Given Data:

 Cylinder Capacity: 22.5 kg (34 liters) @70ᴼ F (21ᴼ C)

 Ini al Pressure: 58.75 bra (853 psi absolute)
 CO₂ expands rapidly from 58.75 brag (5.8 MPa absolute) to atmospheric pressure.
 CO₂ to be discharged: 85% of 22.5 kg = 19.125 kg
 Discharge Time: 1 min
 Pipe Size: 1” C.S. Seamless Pipe (Internal Diameter = 26.64 mm)
 Nozzles: 4 nozzles

Mass Flow Rate Equa on (NFPA 12 & IS 6384 Formula):

Where:

W = Mass flow rate (kg/sec)

Cd = Discharge coefficient (typically 0.72 for CO₂)
A= Nozzle throat area (m²)
P = Upstream absolute pressure (6.9 MPa)
ρ = Density of CO₂ at storage condi ons (≈ 770 kg/m³)
γ = Ra o of specific heats (≈1.29 for CO₂)
Patm = Atmospheric pressure (0.101 MPa)

Required CO₂ Mass Flow Rate

Given:

 Total CO₂ to be released = 22.5 kg × 85% = 19.125 kg

 Discharge me = 1 min
 Required mass flow rate:

This means the system must discharge 19.125 kg/min to complete flooding in one minute.

Flow Rate in 1” C.S. Seamless Pipe

Internal Diameter of 1" C.S. Seamless Pipe = 26.64 mm (0.02664 m)

Pressure Drop Over 30m Pipe with 6 Bends

1. Using the Darcy-Weisbach equa on, pressure drop is:

2. For CO₂ at 58.75 barg, using f ≈ 0.02 (Moody chart for turbulent flow):

3. Pressure Drop Due to Bends:

Each 90° bend adds an equivalent length (L_eq) of 5D:

6. Final pressure a er 30m with bends:

Since choked flow occurs when outlet pressure < 58% of inlet, the system will likely reach choked flow
at the nozzles.

Flow Rate for 4 Nozzles

 Each nozzle must discharge: 19.125/4 = 4.78 kg/min.

 Orifice size calcula on (assuming choked flow):

Solving this gives: diameter of Orifice≈1.2 mm

Thus, each nozzle should have an orifice diameter of ~1.2 mm. Thus, 1.25 mm orifice size per nozzle is
required.
