Tutorial 1

This document outlines a tutorial for Mechanics of Materials (MIN 206) focusing on stress analysis at a point P. It includes tasks such as determining stress vectors, normal and shear components, transformed stress components after rotation, principal stress values, stress invariants, maximum shear stress, and stress tensors. The tutorial emphasizes practical applications of stress analysis concepts in engineering mechanics.

Mechanics of Materials (MIN 206)

Tutorial 1:

(1) The stress state at a point P is given in MPa with axes (x1, x2, x3) by the matrix

(a) Determine the stress vector on the plane whose unit normal is

(b) Determine the normal stress component and shear component on the
same plane

(2) Let the stress components (in MPa) at point P with respect to axes (x1, x2, x3) be
expressed by the matrix

and let the rotated axes (X1, X2, X3) be obtained by a 450 counterclockwise rotation
about the x3 axis. Determine the transformed stress component.

(3) The stress state at a point P is given in MPa with axes (x1, x2, x3) by the matrix

Determine

(a) The principal stress values together with corresponding principal stress directions
(b) Stress invariants
(c) The maximum shear stress value and normal to the plane on which it acts
(d) The mean and deviatoric stress tensors
(e) The stress vector on the octahedral plane together with its normal and shear
components
