CLASS - XI
SUBJECT- CHEMISTRY

TIME: 3 Hours Maximum Marks: 70

General Instructions :
(i) Question paper comprises five Sections – A, B, C, D and E. There are 33 questions in the
question paper. All questions are compulsory.
(ii) Section A – Question 1 to 16 are MCQs of 1 mark each.
(iii) Section B – Question no. 17 to 21 are Very Short Answer Type Questions, carrying 2 marks
each. Answer to each question should not exceed 30-40 words.
(iv) Section C - Question no 22 to 28 are Short Answer Type Questions, carrying 3 marks each.
Answer to each question should not exceed 60-80 words.
(v) Section D – Question no.29 and 30 are Case based questions with three sub questions and
are of 4 marks .
(vi) Section-E -Question no. 31 to 33 are Long Answer Type Questions, carrying 5 marks each.
Answer to each question should not exceed 200-250 words.
(vi) There is no overall choice in the question paper. However, an internal choice has been
provided in few questions. Only one of the choices in such questions have to be attempted.
(viii) In addition to this, separate instructions are given with each section and question,
wherever necessary.

SECTION A
The following questions are multiple choice questions with one correct answer. Each question
carries 1 mark. There is no internal choice in this section.

13. ASSERTION (A): Enthalpy of formation of HCl is equal to bond energy of HCI. (1)
REASON (R): Enthalpy of formation and bond energy both involve the formation of one mole
of HCl from the elements.
14. ASSERTION (A): Chromatography is the method used to separate and purify compounds when
present in small amounts. (1)
REASON (R): Dyes present in black ink can be separated by chromatography.
15. ASSERTION (A): If water is heated to 59°C, the pH will increase. (1)

16. ASSERTION (A): The opposite lobes of a p-orbital have opposite sign whereas opposite lobes

SECTION B
This section contains 5 questions with internal choice in one question. The following
questions are very short answer type and carry 2 marks each.
17. An organic compound contains 69% carbon and 4.8% hydrogen the remainder being oxygen.
Calculate the masses of carbon dioxide and water produce when 0.20 g of this compound is
subjected to complete combustion. (2)

18. a. Explain why the uncertainty principle is significant only from the motion of subatomic
particles and is negligible for macroscopic particles?
b. Aufbau Principle states that in the ground state of the atom, the orbitals are filled in
order of their increasing energies. Then why does chromium atom have outer shell
electronic configuration 3d54s1 and not 3d44s2. (2)

a. Give the limitations of Thomsons Atomic model.


b. Why are Bohrs orbit also called Stationary States? (2)
19. A compound made up of two elements A and B has A= 70%, B = 30%. Their relative number of
moles in the compound is 1.25 and 1.88, calculate:
i. Atomic masses of the elements A and B
ii. Molecular formula of the compound , if its molecular mass is found to be 160. (2)

20. a. Find out whether it is possible to reduce MgO using carbon at 298K.If not, at what
temperature it becomes spontaneous? For reaction: MgO(s) + C(s) → Mg(s) +CO(g)
ΔrH0 = 91.18 kJmol-1 and ΔrS0 = 197.67 JK -1 mol -1
b. Is the bond energy of all the four C-H bonds in CH4 molecule equal ? If not then why? (2)
21. What is meant by limiting reagent? Zinc and hydrochloric acid react according to the reaction:
Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl2( aq) + H2(g). If 0.30 mol Zn are added to hydrochloric acid
containing 0.52 mol of HCl, How many moles of H2 are produced ? (2)

SECTION C
This section contains 7 questions with internal choice in one question. The following
questions are short answer type and carry 3 marks each.
22. a. Name each of the following species and indicate which member of each pair is more stable
giving reason for your choice:

b. o-Nitrophenol is steam volatile while p-Nitrophenol is not. Give reason.

28. Explain the following :
(a) Trans-but-2-ene has higher melting point than cis-isomer.
(b) More substituted alkene is more stable.
(c) C-C bond length in benzene ring is 139 pm which is in between C-C single
bond (154 pm) and C=C double bond (133 pm).

SECTION D
The following questions are case-based questions. Each question carries 4 (1+1+2) marks.
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
29. The existing large number of organic compounds and their ever-increasing numbers has made
it necessary to classify them on the basis of their structures. Organic compounds are broadly
classified as open-chain compounds which are also called aliphatic compounds. Aliphatic
compounds further classified as homocyclic and heterocyclic compounds. Aromatic compounds
are special types of compounds. Alicyclic compounds, aromatic compounds may also have
heteroatom in the ring. Such compounds are called heterocyclic aromatic compounds. Organic
compounds can also be classified on the basis of functional groups, into families or homologous
series. The members of a homologous series can be represented by general molecular formula
and the successive members differ from each other in molecular formula by a –CH2 unit

30. The molecular orbital theory is based on the principle of a linear combination of atomic
orbitals. According to this approach when atomic orbitals of the atoms come closer, they
undergo constructive interference as well as destructive interference giving molecular
orbitals, i.e. two atomic orbitals overlap to form two molecular orbitals. Each molecular
orbital can hold one or two electrons in accordance with Pauli's exclusion principle and
Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity.

31. a. An alkene C4H8 reacts with HBr both in the presence and absence of peroxide to give the same

product. Identify the alkene. Write the mechanism of the reaction when propene reacts with
HBr in the presence of peroxide.

b. Identify A ,B,C and D :

c. Write the structure of products formed on ozonolysis of 3-Methylpent-2-ene. (5)


OR
a. Convert : i. 2- Bromopropane to 1-Bromopropane ii. Benzene to m-nitrochlorobenzene

b. An organic compound 'A' with formula C4H9Br on treatment with KOH(alc.) gave two isomeric
compounds 'B' and 'C' with formula C4H8. Ozonolysis of 'B' gave only one product CH3CHO while
'C' gave two different products. Identify A, B and C.
c. What effect does branching have on the boiling point of an alkane and why? (5)

32. a. The first (IE1) and the second (IE2) ionisation enthalpies (kJ mol-1) of three elements are
given below:

b. Oxygen has first electron gain enthalpy exothermic while second endothermic still a
large number of ionic oxides are formed. Why ? (5)

33. a. Dihydrogen gas is obtained from natural gas by partial oxidation with steam as per the
following endothermic reaction:
CH4 (g) + H2O(g) CO(g) + 3H2 (g)
How will the value of Kp be affected by i. increasing the pressure ii. using a catalyst,
increasing the concentration of methane.
b. The values of Ksp of two sparingly soluble salts Ni(OH) 2 and AgCN are 2.0 x 10-15 and
6 x 10-17 respectively. Which salt is more soluble? Explain.
c. Why can pure solids and liquids be ignored while writing the equilibrium constant
expression? (5)
OR
a. All Lewis bases are also Bronsted bases but all Bronsted acids are not Lewis acids.Explain.
b. The ionization constant of phenol is 1 x 10-10 . Calculate the degree of ionization of the
acid in its 0.05M solution. Also what is the concentration of phenolate ions in the solution.
c. The following system is in equilibrium: 2 NO2 (g) ⇌ N2O4 (g)
(Brown) (Colourless)
What change will you observe when the test tube containing the above system is placed
in a beaker with water at 373 K. Give reason for your answer. (5)
