When on 1st April, 2010, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act became a reality, this historic
step became the first Fundamental Right that has been added to the constitution since India attained independence. The
Act makes it obligatory on the State to guarantee Right to Education and “ensure compulsory admission, attendance and
completion of elementary education by every child of 6 to 14 years.” According to the Act, financial constraints should
not prevent a child from completing elementary education, which means, even if a child lives in a remote area, providing
free transportation will be part of the child's entitlement to education. Some of the salient features of the Act include:
providing for school teachers at 1:30 teacher-pupil ratio at the primary school and 1:35 ratio at the upper primary level
within six months, with these schools having only trained school teachers in five years. The norms for the schools in the
Act include one room for every teacher, subject-wise teachers, toilets and drinking water, a library and a playground
within three years. The Right to Education (RTE) Act has three basic goals: (a) bringing children of marginalised
sections into the ambit of school education; (b) ensuring that all schools and their teachers meet some specified norms;
and (c) ensuring that all children receive quality schooling free from any kind of discrimination. The RTE Act says that
private schools should reserve a fourth of their seats for the poor and other categories of children. The RTE Act says that
all schools should now be ‘recognised’. Given the shortage of trained teachers in the country, there is a need to do some
rethink on this stipulation and explore the possibility of hiring para-teachers to run these schools until sufficient number
of trained teachers are available. Studies in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by Kingdon and Banerji show that children taught
by para-teachers are as good if not better than those taught by regular trained teachers. If the RTE Act is implemented
successfully, India can emerge as a global leader in achieving the Millennium Development Goal of ensuring that all
children complete their elementary education by 2015.

Changing food preferences have brought about rapid changes in the structure of the Indian diet. The rapid proliferation
of multinational fast-food companies and the influence of Western culture have replaced traditional home-cooked meals
with ready-to-eat, processed foods thus increasing the risk of chronic diseases in urban Indians. Therefore, nurturing
healthy eating habits among Indians from an early age would help to reduce health risks.
To date, little is known about the quality and quantity of foods and beverages consumed by urban Indian adolescents.
This lack of evidence is a significant barrier to the development of effective nutrition promotion and disease prevention
measures.
Therefore, a self-administered, semi-quantitative, 59-item meal-based food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was
developed to assess the dietary intake of adolescents. A total of 1026 students (aged 14-16 years) attending private,
English-speaking schools in Kolkata completed the survey. A sample percentage of the food consumption pattern is
displayed (Fig. 1)

The survey results report poor food consumption patterns and highlights the need to design healthy eating initiatives.
Interestingly, while there were no gender differences in the consumption of legumes and fried snacks, the survey found
more females consumed cereals, vegetables and fruits than their male counterparts. In conclusion, the report suggested
that schools ought to incorporate food literacy concepts into their curriculum as they have the potential of increasing the
fruit and vegetable intake in teenagers. Additionally, healthy school canteen policies with improved availability,
accessibility, variety and affordability of healthy food choices would support the consumption of nutritious food in
students.
i. What does the researcher mean by changing food preferences? (2)
ii. Why is affordability recommended as a significant feature of a school canteen policy? (1)
a) Because it would promote balanced intake of food.
b) Because children want to save.
c) Because food is a basics necessity.
d) Because consumers are children.
iii. Why was this survey on the food consumption of adolescents undertaken? (2)
iv. What can be said about the food choices of students on the basis of the figure? (1)
a) Children prefer eating energy boosting foods.
b) Children prefer energy drinks to energy dense foods.
c) Children do not like to eat fruits and vegetable.
d) Children eat only selective food items daily.
v. There were gender differences observed in the consumption of healthy foods, according to the survey.

Sir,
Subject: Increasing Incidents of Mobile and Chain Snatching.
Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I wish to bring to your kind attention towards the deteriorating law and
order situation in the city. Many incidents of daylight mobile and chain snatching have been reported during recent days.
The residents of the locality are frequently becoming the victims of mobile and chain snatchers. Masked youth come on
motorbikes, commit the crime and run away without being caught or traced. All that has caused a lot of insecurity and
fear among residents.
Repeated complaints have been lodged by the victims but to no avail. The officials just give assurance but nothing has
been done so far to control the situation. It has caused a lot of insecurity and fear among the residents and the absence of
law and order in the town has been making the culprits bolder.
There are cases of chain snatching and even kidnapping. None of these criminals is arrested so far. It seems there is no
law and order to control this kind of incidents. So, I request you to look into this matter and take necessary action
immediately.
Thanking you
Yours sincerely,

Sir,
Sub: The problem of begging
Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the concerned authority towards the
problem of begging. Beggars have become a great nuisance these days. They pester people for alms in trains, buses,
markets, and streets. They are also found in hospitals and outside schools and colleges. When you come out of your
home they start begging. They are young healthy fellows who are seen as beggars. Small children are forced for begging.
They encourage others for begging because it's an easy way of income. They rebuke the person who refuses to give them
alms.
Beggars must not be allowed to roam freely on the roads. They also become the cause of anti-social activities. It has
become a profession for some people. It must be abolished and declared a criminal offense.
Yours truly,
Mohit.
6. Promoting Tourism is Promoting Ourselves
by Rajani India has fascinated people from all over the world with its secularism and culture. There are historical
monuments, places of religious interest, beaches and hill resorts that attract tourists. Every region is identified by its
handicrafts, folk dances, music, fairs, people etc. Bounded by the Himalayan mountain ranges in the North, by the
Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal on the other three sides, it can give a delightful experience to the
tourists. The enchanting backwaters, hill stations and landscapes make India a beautiful country to visit.
No doubt, Indian landscape has been one of the most preferred tourist destinations. Tourism plays a vital role in the
economic development of a country. It is the second largest foreign exchange earner for India. The tourism industry
employs a large number of skilled as well as unskilled persons. It also promotes national integration and international
brotherhood. Thus, we should promote it for own benefit.
The government's Department of Tourism promotes international and domestic tourism in the country. The Tourism
Advisory Board recommends measures for promotion of tourist traffic to India. However, international tourism has been
adversely affected by terrorism as well as pollution. Sincere efforts to combat such problems are required to further
develop this industry. Thus, tourism, one of the fastest growing industries today, plays a vital role in the economic
development of our country. By promoting tourism, we will be promoting ourselves.

Role of Counselling in Choice Of Course
by Ram Choosing a definite career and deciding a career goal is very important especially once you have completed your
senior secondary schooling. Unfortunately, not many students are able to discover their potential and interests and that is
when the pressure starts building up.
There is no denying the truth that once we finish our school, we are faced with - what next? A student at the threshold of
a new start has parents, teachers and friends as guides and each one speaks from his/her own perspective. It is at this
juncture that a counsellor can help students in choosing a course that suits them. He/She is the best person to guide you
and help you decide your career based on your aptitude, skills, interests, performance and personality.
Human talent and potential is tremendous and can't be measured as such. Each individual has his/her strengths and
weaknesses. A career counsellor identifies that unique quality and guides one to know the different career paths. With all

this information, students can make an informed choice. Even in the future, counselling helps in setting goals and gives
directions to life. Thus, I would say that with the help of career counsellors, students end up choosing the best profession
well suited to their needs. They perform well and ultimately succeed in life. So, let us make an intelligent and
professional move and step ahead in the right direction with the help of those who are more aware and informed.

d. The narrator gets the impression that they are willing to do any work which earns money.
9. Answer ANY FIVE of the following six questions in about 30- 40 words each
1. The ‘trunkless legs’ and ‘shattered visage’ suggest the mortality of man. No one can live forever, even if he is a king.
Time is a great leveller. Even colossal statues can’t stand the test of time.
2. The postmen as well as the postmaster were very rude towards Ali. The postmen used to ridicule him and called him
mad. They were insensitive and cruel. The postmaster was haughty, arrogant and emotionless. He was ill-tempered
and called Ali ‘a pest.’
3. Due to the craze for the Ouija Board, people everywhere were calling ghosts out of their beds at all times. As a result,
life became very difficult for the ghosts. They used to live a peaceful life, occasionally playing a game of haunting,
but with the Ouija Board fanatics calling them, they had no rest, and had to answer very strange questions all the
time.
4. According to Sosanko, Patol Babu was the luckiest of actors that day because he was the only one who had any
dialogue to deliver in the scene that was shot. Moreover, there had been over a hundred actors in that film who played

6. Victoria is the precocious ten year old daughter of the Slater couple. She is compassionate and loves her grandfather.
She is innocent, but has some worldly wisdom which is clear from the fact that she understood that her parents had
stolen grandfather’s belongings.
10. Answer ANY ONE of the following two questions in about 150 words.
1. The grandfather's relationship with his daughters is depicted in this play as a farce (joke) between parents and
children. The daughters treat their father poorly. They are simply interested in obtaining his goods and the money
from his insurance coverage. The girls had no sympathies for their supposedly deceased father, who must have
brought them up and arranged their marriages despite facing hardships as part of his parental responsibilities.
They feel that he is a burden to them in his old age. They only want to put up a show of mourning by dressing in
mourning clothes. They also try to pull each other down by commenting on each other’s actions.
All of these incidents demonstrate how family values like unconditional love and respect for elders are gradually
eroding as a result of the materialistic pressures in modern society to look "correct" and perform better than others.
Not only this, greed for money and possessions dominates people’s thinking.
2. Avoid Having False Image
by Rashmi Kaushik The story ‘Mrs. Packletide’s Tiger’ is a very apt depiction of how things can backfire if we try to
portray ourselves as someone we are not.
Mrs Packletide incurred huge losses in her bid to outdo her arch-rival. When you try to imitate someone else's
behaviour or express some idea of how you think you should be but aren't, you will end up with more loss than gain.
Mrs. Packletide wished to dazzle everyone, especially Loona Bimberton, but what happened? Loona Bimberton did
not attend Mrs Packletide's party where she presented the tiger skin rug.
Moreover, Mrs. Packletide had to pay a lot of money to keep Miss Mebbin quiet. Thus, Mrs. Packletide lost a large
amount of money but gained hardly anything.
Similarly, we should not put on false pretences to portray what we are not. Instead, we should display our true selves
and try to become better human beings.
