Sentences
Instructions: Read each sentence and identify whether it is a Simple,
Compound, or Complex sentence. Write your answer in the space
provided.
Part A :
a)The man is poor but honest.
b) If it rains, we will not go outside.
c) She sings and dances.
d) I have a new book that I bought yesterday.
e) The sun rose and the fog disappeared.
f) Despite being sick, he came to work.
g) The boys are playing in the field.
h) Will you go to the market today or bring something for me?
i) Whoever works hard, succeeds.
j) The man is tall and strong.
Part B: Short Writing
Instructions: Write a short paragraph (4-5 sentences) about your favorite
place. Use at least one Simple sentence, one Compound sentence, and
one Complex sentence in your paragraph
Part C: Join the Sentences
Instructions:
Each question has two or three simple sentences. Combine them into one
meaningful sentence using either a compound or complex structure. Use
proper conjunctions (FANBOYS or subordinating conjunctions like because,
although, when, while, since, etc.).
1.I woke up late. I missed the bus.
Because I woke up late, I missed the bus. (Complex)
I woke up late, so I missed the bus. (Compound)
2.The power went out. We used candles.
3.He practices every day. He wants to improve.
4.She loves painting. She also enjoys playing the piano.
5.I studied hard. I still didn’t pass the test.
6.The phone rang. I didn’t answer it.
7.I went outside. It was raining.
8.They played well. They didn’t win the match.
9.She cooked dinner. He cleaned the kitchen.
10.We couldn’t go swimming. The pool was closed.
