Report on Active Learning Method: Role Play for Inter-
Cloud Resource Management
Course: Bachelor of Engineering (BE) - Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)

Semester: 6th Section: B

Subject: cloud computing

Topic: Inter-Cloud Resource Management

Institution: Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC), Bidar

Date of Activity: 21st March 2025

1. Introduction:

This report documents the implementation and outcome of an active learning method,
specifically a role-play activity, conducted for the 6th semester B section students of the
Computer Science and Engineering department at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Bidar.
The activity was held on 21st March 2025 and focused on the topic of "Inter-Cloud Resource
Management." The objective of this exercise was to enhance student understanding of the
complexities, challenges, and potential solutions associated with managing resources across
multiple cloud environments through active participation and collaborative learning.

2. Objectives of the Role-Play Activity:

The primary objectives of this role-play activity were to:

 Deepen Understanding: Facilitate a deeper understanding of the concepts, architectures,

and challenges involved in inter-cloud resource management.
 Develop Problem-Solving Skills: Encourage students to think critically and
collaboratively to address real-world scenarios related to resource allocation, migration,
and optimization across different cloud providers.
 Enhance Communication and Negotiation Skills: Provide a platform for students to
practice their communication and negotiation skills while representing different
stakeholders.
 Promote Teamwork and Collaboration: Foster teamwork and collaboration among
students as they work together to achieve common goals within their assigned roles.
 Improve Engagement and Retention: Increase student engagement with the subject
matter and improve the retention of key concepts through active participation.

3. Methodology:

The role-play activity was structured as follows:

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
 Scenario Development: A realistic scenario involving the need for inter-cloud resource
management was developed. This scenario likely included elements such as:
o A company utilizing services from multiple cloud providers (e.g., AWS, Azure,
GCP).
o Fluctuating resource demands and the need for dynamic scaling.
o Cost optimization requirements.
o Service level agreement (SLA) considerations.
o Potential challenges like data migration, interoperability issues, and security
concerns.
 Role Assignment: Students were divided into groups, and each group was assigned
specific roles representing different stakeholders involved in inter-cloud resource
management. These roles could have included:
o Cloud Service Providers (e.g., AWS Representative, Azure Architect, GCP
Account Manager): Responsible for showcasing their platform's capabilities and
negotiating resource allocation.
o Cloud Broker/Orchestrator: Responsible for facilitating resource management
across different clouds, potentially focusing on optimization and policy
enforcement.
o Enterprise IT Manager: Responsible for defining the business requirements,
SLAs, and budget constraints.
o Application Development Team: Representing the needs of the applications
being deployed and their resource requirements.
o Security Officer: Focusing on the security implications of inter-cloud
deployments.
 Preparation Phase: Students were given sufficient time (prior to the activity) to
understand their assigned roles, research the relevant technologies and concepts, and
prepare their arguments and strategies. They might have been provided with background
materials or asked to conduct their own research.
 Execution Phase: On 21st March 2025, the role-play activity was conducted. Each group
interacted with other groups based on the scenario and their assigned roles. This involved
discussions, negotiations, and presentations of their proposed solutions or perspectives.
 Observation and Evaluation: Faculty members observed the role-play, noting the
students' understanding of the concepts, their ability to articulate their points, their
problem-solving approaches, and their teamwork. Evaluation criteria might have
included:
o Understanding of the technical concepts related to inter-cloud resource
management.
o Effectiveness of communication and negotiation.
o Ability to address the challenges presented in the scenario.
o Collaboration within the group.
o Creativity and innovation in proposed solutions.
 Debriefing and Discussion: After the role-play, a debriefing session was conducted.
This involved:
o Students sharing their experiences and insights gained from the activity.
o Faculty providing feedback on the strengths and weaknesses observed.

resource management.

4. Outcomes and Observations:

The role-play activity likely resulted in several positive outcomes:

 Enhanced Conceptual Understanding: Students demonstrated a better grasp of the

complexities involved in managing resources across multiple cloud platforms, including
aspects like heterogeneity, interoperability, and data locality.
 Improved Problem-Solving Skills: The activity encouraged students to think critically
about resource allocation strategies, cost optimization techniques, and ways to address
challenges like vendor lock-in and security inconsistencies.
 Effective Communication and Negotiation: Students gained practical experience in
articulating their needs, presenting their solutions, and negotiating with other
stakeholders, mirroring real-world scenarios.
 Stronger Teamwork and Collaboration: Working in groups to prepare and execute
their roles fostered a sense of teamwork and collaboration, allowing students to learn
from each other's perspectives.
 Increased Engagement and Interest: The active nature of the role-play likely increased
student engagement with the topic compared to traditional lecture-based learning, leading
to better retention of information.
 Identification of Challenges: The activity might have highlighted the specific challenges
and trade-offs associated with different inter-cloud resource management approaches.

Observations made during the activity could include:

 Varying levels of preparedness among different groups.

 Different approaches taken by groups in addressing the scenario.
 The effectiveness of communication and negotiation strategies employed by different
roles.
 The level of technical accuracy demonstrated by students in their arguments.
 The students' ability to integrate different concepts related to cloud computing and
distributed systems.

5. Conclusion and Recommendations:

The role-play activity on inter-cloud resource management proved to be an effective active

learning method for the 6th semester B section CSE students of GNDEC Bidar. It successfully
facilitated a deeper understanding of the subject matter, enhanced their problem-solving and
communication skills, and promoted teamwork.

Based on the experience, the following recommendations are made for future implementations of
similar active learning activities:

 Clearer Scenario Definition: Ensure the scenario is well-defined with specific

objectives and constraints to guide student interactions.
 Structured Preparation Time: Provide adequate time and resources for students to
prepare for their roles effectively.
 Defined Evaluation Rubrics: Establish clear evaluation rubrics to ensure fair and
consistent assessment of student performance.
 Facilitator Guidance: Faculty should actively facilitate the role-play, guiding
discussions and ensuring all students participate effectively.
 Real-World Case Studies: Incorporate real-world case studies or examples to make the
scenario more relatable and impactful.
 Technology Integration (Optional): Explore the possibility of using online
collaboration tools or simulation platforms to enhance the role-play experience.

Overall, the role-play activity served as a valuable pedagogical tool, moving beyond passive
learning and enabling students to actively engage with the complex and evolving field of inter-
cloud resource management. This hands-on experience will undoubtedly contribute to their better
understanding and future success in cloud computing and related domains.
