Problem Statement for Proposed Capstone

Research Project

Guidelines1

 This form is to be completed by students who are preparing to carry out a capstone
research project. Completing a research problem statement is the first step in
planning to conduct a research project.
 The form should be completed using Calibri font, size 12.
 The completed form must be submitted as a Word or PDF via the appropriate
submission portal on your moodle page.
 Exceeding word limits will incur a penalty.
 The proposal must be based on the intended dissertation project.

Project Overview
1. What is the title for your dissertation research project (10-15 words)

Self reflection:

Does your title start with a verb? E.g. exploring or examing? (It should)

Does your title include abbreviations? (It should not – all words should be written out in full)

Does your title explore something in the future? (It should not – this can not be measured in
12 weeks)
Does your title include a sensitive topic? E.g. money laundering? (It should not)

2. What will be the aims and objectives of your capstone research project? (200 words max)

 Aim(s): Statement of what you hope to achieve (typically 1-2 aims)


 Objective(s): Statement of how you intend to achieve the aims (brief overview of
methodology and participant sample) (1-2 objectives, to support each aim)
Do not include more than 3 of each.

3. State the research question(s) that your project will attempt to answer (100 words max)
Three research questions – these should have ? at the end of each question
They should be directly related to your topic
One question should give you the direction for your data collection
They should be more specific than your title

4. Outline the participant sample, recruitment strategy and data collection method (200
words max)

Recruitment strategy? – How will you get them to take part in your research?

Data Collection methods – Surveys, Interviews, or existing Data Set*


If you are using an existing data set you must also include the following – a link to the dataset
if its publicly available, screenshots if not.
Explain who collected the existing data set, for what purposes and when.
Explain why it is fitting to your research aims.
Explain how you intend to analyse it and what you believe that analysis will tell you.
5. Outline the rationale for proposing to conduct this research project and explain the
academic foundations for the project, citing key studies the proposed research will build on
(600 words max)

Use the PEECL approach


Prove the premise in your statement – e.g. if you are exploring why men are
underpresentated in nursing prove that they are underpresented in nursing
Explain why this is important
Explain what has historically been done, and what is the current approach
Then link back to your title and explain what you are hoping to achieve in your own research
