• Reading Comprehension (1) :
Jesse Owens was born in 1913 in Alabama, in the south of the USA. When he was at school, he

ran for the school athletics team and he became the USA schools champion. He then went to Ohio

State University’s athletics team. At that time, life was difficult for black people in the USA because

they were not equal to white people. Owens couldn’t live or eat in the same places as the white

university athletes.

In 1936 Owens went to The Berlin Olympics. At that time Hitler ruled Germany and he wanted

white athletes to show they were better than African Americans. But Jesse Owens won four gold

medals. When he returned to America he was a hero for millions of Americans, but President

Roosevelt didn’t want to meet him. Life was difficult for Owens after the Olympics and he had to race

against horses to earn money. But before he died in 1980, President Ford gave him the Medal of

Freedom for his achievement.

• Reading Comprehension (2) :
Adam Dalgliesh is one of Britain’s most popular fictional detectives. He was created by the
writer PD James. James was born in Oxford and she began writing in the 1950s . James knew a lot
about criminal investigations because she worked for the criminal section of a British government
department for many years.
The hero of James’ stories is Adam Dalgliesh, an extremely intelligent police detective who is
also a poet. He is in charge of the Special Murder Squad, a group of detectives that investigate the
murders of important people. Dalgleish lives by the river Thames in the Uk’s capital city, and drives a
jaguar car . He is tall and dark and he is a very private man. He was married and he had a daughter,
but both of them died.
There are 14 novels about Adam Dalgliesh and British TV has made all of them into successful
TV programmes. TV companies around the world have shown the programmes and her novels are
also available in over 15 different languages.
