• Assume suitable data wherever required and provide justification.
• Answer all the questions.
Total allowed time: 50 minutes Maximum marks: 10
1. Perovskite is a mineral containing calcium, titanium, and oxygen. The unit cell is cubic and has
a Calcium atom at each corner, an Oxygen atom at each face center, and a Titanium atom at the
body-centered position. The atoms contribute to the unit cell in the usual way (1/8 atom contribu-
tion for each atom at the corners, etc.). (2 Marks)
(a) Describe this structure as a lattice and a basis.
(b) How many atoms of each type are there per unit cell?
(c) An alternate way of drawing the unit cell of perovskite has Calcium at the body-centered po-
sition of each cubic unit cell. What are the positions of the Titanium and Oxygen atoms in this
representation of the unit cell?
2. Sketch the 12 members of the < 110 > family for a cubic crystal. (1 Marks)
3. Calculate the planar density and planar packing fraction for the (010) and (020) planes in simple
cubic polonium, which has a lattice parameter of 0.334 nm. (1 Marks)
4. Determine the Miller-Bravais direction indices of the vectors originating at the center of the lower
basal plane and ending at the end points of the upper basal plane. (1 Marks)
5. Draw the hexagonal crystal planes whose Miller-Bravais indices are:
(a) (101̄1)
(b) (011̄1)
(c) (1̄21̄0)
(d) (12̄12)
(e) (21̄1̄1)
(f) (11̄01) (2 Marks)
6. Calculate the planar atomic density in atoms per square millimeter for the (0001) plane in HCP
beryllium which has constant ‘a (short edge length)’ = 0.22856 nm and ‘c (long edge length)’ constant
of 0.35832 nm. (1 Marks)
7. Determine the Miller indices of the cubic crystal plane that intersects the following position coordi-
nates:
(a) 100; 1 21 14 ; 12 12 0
(b) 12 0 12 ; 001; 111. (2 Marks)
