Gyro Errors RollingError

The document discusses gyro errors, specifically the first and second rolling errors. The first rolling error is caused by asymmetrical mass distribution in a compass, leading to torque and precession effects. The second rolling error results from mercury displacement during compass swinging, creating vertical and horizontal forces that affect the compass's tilt and direction.

First Rolling Error
Cause by compass swinging. If the compass has asymmetrical mass
distribution, it will tend to turn about a vertical axis until the plane of
greatest mass distribution is aligned to the plane of the swing.

Torque produced
1. The torque about vertical axis is
produced, north end to the east.

2. Cause a precession in tilt up or
down.
3. Ballistic control cause
precession in azimuth and the
compass will wander.

Second Rolling Error
Cause by displacement of the mercury brought about by surging
between the pots as the compass swings.
Give rise to two forces – Vertical and Horizontal.
