Impact Test

The document outlines the procedures for conducting Izod's and Charpy's impact tests on metal specimens to determine their impact strength. It details the apparatus, significance, procedures, precautions, and formulas necessary for calculating the strain energy absorbed and the resulting impact strength. Observations and results are to be recorded for analysis of the material's behavior under impact loads.

4.

Impact test on metal specimen

[Link]: 4 a IZOD’S IMPACT TEST

Date :

Aim:
To determine the impact test of a given specimen.

Apparatus used:
1. Impact Testing Machine

Specimen:
The Standard impact strength specimen is shown in Figure.

Significance:

The modes of failure observed under conditions of loads can be classified as (I) Brittle,
(II) Ductile (III) Intermediate. Most of the materials exhibit changes from ductile to brittle
behavior, which occurs at a transition temperature. This embitterment of the material can be
accessed by this impact test.
Procedure:

• Set the pointer to the maximum reading of the dial.

• Release the lock so that it is allowed to swing.
• Record the energy absorbed due to friction, which is indicated by the pointer on the
dial. Call it A.
• Lock the Pendulum in its original position.
• Keep the specimen truly Vertical in the vice such that the notch in the specimen is
kept on the opposite side of the below.
• Release the lock and allow the striking edge of the pendulum to strike the specimen.
• The reading shown (Call it B) in the dial is the energy absorbed by the specimen,
which includes the energy absorbed due to friction.
• Therefore, actual strain energy absorbed by the specimen equals B-A.
• Izod’s impact strength of the given specimen = Strain energy absorbed / Resisting
area of the notch

Precautions:
• Pendulum must swing freely over the horizontal axis of rotation.
• Friction efforts must be counted.
• Operation should not stand inside the swinging zone of the pendulum.
• Only standard pendulum must be used.

Observations:
Strain energy absorbed due to friction (A) = ----------- Joules.
Strain energy absorbed by the specimen + Friction (B) = ----------
Actual strain energy absorbed =B-A
Resisting area at the keyhole notch = ----------in mm2
Tabulation:

The failure surface are often bright granular called crystalline or dull-gray fibrous in
nature.
