Science Cheat Notes: A Quick Reference
I. Physics:
- Motion: Speed = Distance/Time; Acceleration = Change in velocity/Time. Newton’s Laws of
Motion: 1. Inertia; 2. F=ma; 3. Action-Reaction.
- Forces: Gravity, friction, tension, etc. Vectors have magnitude and direction.
- Energy: Kinetic (motion), Potential (stored), Conservation of Energy (energy cannot be created
or destroyed, only transformed).
- Waves: Transverse (light), Longitudinal (sound). Wavelength, frequency, amplitude.
- Electricity: Current (flow of electrons), Voltage (potential difference), Resistance (opposition to
flow). Ohm’s Law: V=IR.
II. Chemistry:
- Matter: Solid, liquid, gas, plasma. Atoms, molecules, compounds, mixtures.
- Periodic Table: Organization of elements by atomic number and properties. Groups (columns)
and Periods (rows).
- Chemical Reactions: Reactants → Products. Balancing equations. Types of reactions
(synthesis, decomposition, single/double displacement).
- Acids and Bases: pH scale (0-14, 7 is neutral). Acids donate H+, bases accept H+.
- Stoichiometry: Calculations involving the amounts of reactants and products in chemical
reactions.
III. Biology:
- Cells: Basic unit of life. Prokaryotic (no nucleus) and Eukaryotic (with nucleus). Organelles
(mitochondria, chloroplasts, etc.).
- Photosynthesis: Conversion of light energy into chemical energy (glucose). 6CO₂ + 6H₂O →
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
- Cellular Respiration: Breakdown of glucose to release energy (ATP). C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂
+ 6H₂O
- Genetics: DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), RNA (ribonucleic acid). Genes, chromosomes.
Mendelian inheritance.
- Evolution: Change in species over time. Natural selection.
IV. Earth Science:
- Plate Tectonics: Earth’s crust is divided into plates that move. Causes earthquakes and
volcanoes.
- Weathering and Erosion: Breakdown and transport of rock.
- Rock Cycle: Formation and transformation of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic).
- Water Cycle: Evaporation, condensation, precipitation.
- Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature and weather patterns.
