Prestressed Concrete Design Problems

The document presents a detailed analysis of prestressed concrete design, focusing on two problems involving the calculation of stresses in prestressed beams under various loads. Problem 1 involves a bridge beam with specified prestress forces and loads, while Problem 2 analyzes a rectangular beam's stresses due to its own weight and prestressing. The document includes calculations for initial and final stresses, as well as stress diagrams for both problems.

Problem 1.
A bridge is designed using a prestressed beam as shown. The prestress force is 800KN at an
eccentricity of 200mm from the centroid of the section. Weight of the beam is 2.64KN/m.
Superimposed dead load is 6KN/m and live load of 6KN/m. The beam is simply supported on
bearings at 12m. Consider 20% loss of prestress at service loads.
a) Solve for the initial stress at bottom and top fiber at midspan of the beam.
b) Solve for the final stress at bottom and top fiber at midspan of the beam.
c) Draw the stress diagram at initial and final stage.

Problem 2.
A rectangular beam of cross section 350mm deep and 250mm wide is
prestressed by means of 15 wires of 5mm diameter located 65mm from the bottom of the
beam ad 3 wires of diameter of 5mm, 25mm from the top. Assuming the prestress in the steel
is 840MPa and the density of concrete is 24KN/m³.

supporting its own weight over a span of 6m.
