Modern day Graffiti began in the late 1960s in
Philadelphia. Some graffiti had political messages, and
some graffiti had no meaning at all.
“Cornbread” was one of the first-known graffiti artists in
Philadelphia. His real name was Darryl McCray. He
and his friends often signed their nicknames on the
walls while no one was watching, and this started the
trend of tagging. The trend spread to New York and
then to Europe. Taggers painted their names on walls,
bridges, trains, and even planes. However, other
people didn’t find graffiti interesting, exciting, or
creative. Many people didn’t like the graffiti and thought
it looked awful.
