Plan Of Investigation
My topic is sports, and the subtopic is the influence of nutrition on athletic
performance. I chose this topic because sports have a huge impact on local
communities, world economies, and personal health. Both athletes and their
support systems need to understand how nutrition affects athletic
performance. I will make use of information about sports by exploring
articles, poetry collections, and YouTube videos on sports. This research will
benefit me as an English student by enhancing my vocabulary,
comprehension, and paraphrasing skills, helping me effectively express ideas
and summarize information in my SBA and reflective tasks.

POEM
Nutrition
Good nutrition is very important for the day,
In order for you to run and play;
Protein, vitamins, dairy and carbohydrates,
But don’t forget to stay hydrated!
Good nutrition helps you become big and strong,
And helps you live very long
Carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and dairy.
Plus, you can have quite the variety!
But, I may hear you ask,
‘What is good nutrition?’
‘Isn’t exercise also beneficial?’
Well to that I say yes;
But unhealthiness is a mess.
So dairy, carbohydrates, protein and vitamins,
With a bit of butter,
Might as well add some toast too.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
The Caribbean is well known around the world for its prowess in sporting
activities such as cricket, athletics, boxing, football, swimming, netball, among
others. The talent that exists in this small region is remarkable for its size and this
natural talent is the main reason for our success over the years. During the
last decade much more attention was given to coaching, administration,
sponsorship and physical preparation. Good as this is, it is not enough. Physical
training is essential to achieve success in sports but the very best results can only
come through a combination of professional training and good nutrition.(12) In the
Caribbean, unfortunately, not enough planning has gone into the nutritional aspects
of the athlete’s preparation before, during and after sports events. The question
then becomes: how would Caribbean athletes perform if they utilized a nutrition
program geared to optimize their talents in the different sporting events? This
paper focuses on one aspect of this nutrition imperative – the glycemic [Link] is
well known that the diet which is optimal for health should also be optimal
for sports performance. For certain athletic events, however, modifications and
specific recommendations relative to the use of nutrients may enhance
performance. For sports performance it is the biochemical and physiological
function of food that is critical. Caribbean coaches and athletes should therefore be
aware of the importance of the glycemic index of commonly consumed foods in
the region. The three basic purposes of food are – to provide energy, to regulate
metabolic processes and to support growth and development. For athletic
competition the first two functions are very important. For training in
preparation for competition – all three functions are necessary.

Reflection: #1
Artifact: The Impact of Sports on Personal Growth
Through exploring how Nutrition affects sports performance, I learned that the
Caribbean excels in sports, but better athlete diets are vital for optimal results. The
article "Caribbean Sports and Nutrition: Focus on the Glycemic Index" highlighted
that a nutrition plan considering the glycemic index, along with coaching and
training, can enhance performance. Before this SBA, I knew the basic concepts of
sports and nutrition but did not really see how great their impact on performance
was. The poem "Nutrition" and the video "Foods to Improve Athletic Performance
and Recovery" elaborated on the role of balanced nutrition in strength and
endurance. These artifacts motivated me to understand that good nutrition is crucial
for athletic success. This research has greatly improved my knowledge and will
help me in adopting improved eating habits for increased sports performance and
overall health.

Reflection : #2
Mary Odu’s poem, “Nutrition” uses the literary technique of rhyme, emphasizing
the link between emotional health and nourishment. Rhyming pairs like “food” and
“mood” underscore the poem's message on the importance of a healthy diet for
physical and mental well being. In the newspaper article, “Caribbean Sports and
Nutrition Focus on Glycemic Index” uses rhetorical questions such as, “how could
Caribbean athletes perform with a tailored nutrition program?”. This makes the
reader ponder the impact of nutrition on sports. They note current gaps and
emphasize that better meal planning improves athletic performance, thereby
supporting the main idea of the article. The online video "Foods to Improve
Athletic Performance and Recovery" uses statistics, saying, "Athletes with a
balanced nutrition plan see a 20% improvement in performance over those with
poor diets." This shows clear proof of how good nutrition helps performance,
making the link between diet and athletic success stronger for viewers.

Reflection #3
From my research into a balanced diet, I obtained useful information on how
proper nutrition stimulates athletic performance and promotes recovery. This
information enabled me to become more conscious of my mode of eating,
and now I always have more energy whenever I engage in any physical
activity. I enjoyed the group work because most members were quite active
and contributed equally towards the project.
This project really made me realize how nutrition is associated with sports
performance and helped me develop skills in doing research. Besides that, my
vocabulary also expanded as I learned new words linked with sports and
nutrition. As a result, this project was highly beneficial to both my personal
growth and my academic development.

Group Written Report
The main topic researched for this School-Based-Assessment was Sport and
the subtopics selected by the members aligned with this theme.
The first thing completed was the allocation of themes and subtopics.
Through various internet searches and self-reflection of the group's members,
subtopics were chosen based on their personal interests and concerns that
appeal to their personality and comfort with the assigned [Link] choose
these artifacts for the group written report as they were best suited for it with
how relevant the artifacts were to analyze and write on. Members began
sourcing their data and material which was discussed among the group and
approved by the group leader and teacher.
The article selected was: ‘Male vs Female Professional Sports Salary
Comparison’ written by students of Adelphi University. This was accurate
and factual. It highlighted the difference in compensation between male and
female athletes showing how long and how drastically women have been
suffering from this pay gap. It also states that women are attempting to
combat it. Additionally, a poem entitled ‘An Athlete’s Poem’ by Lei Strauss
was chosen. The main idea of which was that in order to achieve your goals,
you must be disciplined and work extremely hard. Also that failure is a major
part of the process. It served as a mind strengthening inspirational piece.
Lastly, the final artefact selected was a poster titled ‘The athlete’s Mind:
Injury Recovery’ constructed by Dr. Chris Stankovch. This poster vividly and
brightly states that recovering from an injury entails both mental and physical
work. It uses concise language to inform the steps and factors of how one can
recover healthily and in good spirit.
It was found that there are many aspects of sports such as political, mental
and physical. These elements influence sports participation. Thus, sports play
a critical role in society and deserve attention and support.
Overall, through this SBA,the group strengthened its collaboration skills,
enhanced each member’s sense of responsibility and encouraged open
mindedness and sensitivity toward the needs of others.

Artifact# 1
Male vs Female Professional Sports Salary Comparison
The average American woman earns 83% of what an average American man earns,
according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This stark disparity has hardly budged
for over a decade: the pay gap between men and women has sat between 80% and
84% since 2004.
The gap varies by industry, according to Payscale: the legal profession has the
worst discrepancy at 61%, while arts, entertainment and sports comes in well
above average at 96%. While this is heartening for advocates of equal pay, there is
still progress that needs to be made—especially when it comes to professional
sports.
With new developments ahead, we are taking a look back at how athlete
compensation has changed over the past ten years, comparing average salaries of
men and women across sports like basketball, soccer and tennis. While many steps
have been taken in pursuit of equal pay, inequality continues to exist.
Sport management professionals have the knowledge, skills and ability to enact
meaningful change in the sports industry. Executives in the industry have the
opportunity to directly improve the salary of female athletes, and employees in
more junior positions can be strong advocates for women’s equity in sports.

An Athlete’s Poem
It takes a lot of time to master such skill
There are lot of downtimes but I climb on my hill
There are days that my body is strained and about to give up
But I go back to self- determination and rise up
The passion to play runs in my veins
I will train myself hard though it rains
My discipline is as scorching as sun
But I still make my sport a sort of fun
This game is worthwhile and is something even more
The confidence it gives can make my dreams soar
Every accomplishment that I made, my modesty becomes better
Each time I face defeat, my dedication becomes stronger
Winning and losing are faces of reality
But it changes my entire entity
So I keep myself motivated and listen to my coach
The God Almighty Himself will hand me His torch
There is something more than a gold medal hanging on my neck
It is something that no one can ever wreck
This whole meaningful experience makes me complete
I am very proud that I grow to be an ATHLETE
