Social problems like food poverty and homelessness are on the rise in many

countries, but adequate support such as accommodation, free meals and medical
care are often unavailable. What are the causes of homelessness today and how
can we best deal with it?
Homelessness is defined as the state of lacking a fixed, regular and
adequate residence. It is an issue faced by a vast majority of nations, both affluent
and underdeveloped ones. Though there is a large number of causes and negative
effects, effective solutions are there to help tackle with the issue.
There is a plethora of reasons that lead to homelessness. First and foremost
are economy-related causes such as rise in unemployment due to many people
not meeting the standards of companies or increasing rate of inflation, which
results in everything becoming more costly and in turn, causes higher living costs
that obviously, many citizens can not afford. Destitution can also be a result of
health-related issues, especially mental health. Family disputes or physicals
abnormalities are popular reasons for this. Also, people who experience extreme
conditions that have their home destroyed such as natural disasters also find
themselves in a homeless situation.
Homelessness has been having a profound negative impact on both the
individuals’ life and the overall well-being of the society. People without a fixed
abode are prone to a lot of threats such as becoming affected by contagious
diseases and spreading them to other people as well. Additionally, governments
also have to spend money to provide those people with temporary homes and
subsidize them, which, in turn, lead to lower budgets to invest in the need of
others.
So what are realistic and effective solutions to tackle with homelessness?
Methods to iron out this problem are divided into two groups: short-term and
long-term solutions. Short-term solutions include providing more emergency
shelters for people who face temporary homelessness, opening food banks to
provide free meals. Nevertheless, the most optimal ways to cope with
homelessness are taking long-term solutions into action. There are a myriad of
long-term solutions, for instance, educating people, especially young children,
about the detrimental effects of homelessness and how to prevent it. Another key
to solving the problem of homelessness is to raise people’s awareness to partly
help and protect homeless people in their community, not neglect or discriminate
them.
All in all, though the causes of homelessness are varied and the negative
effects are inevitable, there are also lots of proper solutions to effectively deal
with the problem and prevent the seriousness of it from passing the point of no
return.
