Conditions Which Generate This Code:
Illustration 1 g01926874
Schematic of the "Left Joystick Thumbwheel Modulation" control
This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the voltage of the circuit for the
"Thumbwheel" as being above normal. The signal circuit of the "Thumbwheel" PWM
output may be shorted to the +battery circuit.
The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The signal circuit for the "Thumbwheel Modulation" control is open.
The signal circuit for the "Thumbwheel Modulation" control is shorted to the
+battery circuit.
The "Thumbwheel Modulation" control has failed.
The power circuit or the ground circuit has failed.
The ECM has failed. A failure of the Machine ECM is unlikely.
Note: The Machine ECM is equipped with LED indicators that serve as a self-diagnostic
check. With the key start switch ON, the following can be determined by the ECM
indicator lights: · If all of the LED lights are Off, voltage is not being supplied to the
Machine ECM. Check for power to the ECM. · If the yellow LED is Flashing, a
communication error exists on the "CAN" data-link circuit. · If the yellow LED is constantly
On, the Machine ECM software may be missing / not loaded. · If the red LED is Flashing,
the Machine ECM has failed and may need replacement.
Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these
created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic
code has been corrected.
Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 1657 FMI 03 is active before
performing this procedure.
System Response:
When this diagnostic code occurs, there is no warning on the monitor. The "thumbwheel"
control of the joystick will be inoperative.

E. At connector J1 of the machine harness, measure the resistance between contact
J1-37 (wire M943-YL(Yellow)) and contact J1-2 (wire 235-BK(Black)). Also measure
the resistance between contact J1-37 (wire M943-YL(Yellow)) and contact J1-14
(wire 235-BK(Black)).
Expected Result:
Both resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms.
Results:
YES - Both resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms. Proceed to Test Step
4.
NO - Either resistance is greater than 5 ohms. There is an open circuit in the wiring
harness.
Repair: There is an open circuit in the wiring harness. Repair the wiring harness or
replace the wiring harness.
STOP
Test Step 4. CHECK THE WIRING HARNESS OF THE "THUMBWHEEL
MODULATION" CONTROL FOR A SHORT TO THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT.

A. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
B. The machine harness remains disconnected from the joystick.
C. The machine harness connectors remain disconnected from the ECM.
D. At the machine harness connector for the ECM, measure the resistance from the
signal contact J1-37 (wire M943-YL(Yellow)) of the machine harness to all possible
sources from the +battery circuit. Measure the resistance to all contacts that are
used in the J1 and J2 harness connectors.
Expected Result:
Each resistance measurement should be greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
OK - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine
harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 5.
NOT OK - One or more resistance measurements are not correct. There is a short
in the machine harness. The short is between signal contact J1-37 (wire M943-
YL(Yellow)) and the circuit with the low resistance measurement. Repair the
machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 5. CHECK THE OUTPUT OF THE "THUMBWHEEL MODULATION"
