name?” in English.

(In each lesson of this 25-part series, you'll encounter a common question that English
learners come across, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn
how each of these key phrases works by breaking them down into each component.
T hen, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the
question, its answers, and any variations.)

In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What's your
name?”

Eric : What is your name?

Becky: T he first word in the question is

Eric : what

Becky: T his is a question word used to ask for more information.

Eric : (Slow, by syllable) what

Becky: Listen again and repeat.

Eric : what

Becky: T his pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the
translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated
throughout the series. T ry to speak aloud as often as possible. T he next word in the

Becky: You’ll see that it’s almost the same. Simply replace “Lisa” with “Peter.”

Becky: Let’s try another and replace “Peter” with “Sarah.”

Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Sarah.”

Eric : My name is Sarah.

Becky: Again, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name “Peter” with “Sarah.”
Now say, “My name is Sarah.”

{pause}

Eric : My name is Sarah.

Becky: For more practice, replace “Sarah” with “Viktor.”

Eric : Viktor

Becky: Viktor, a person’s name.

Eric : (slow) Viktor (regular) Viktor

Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Viktor.”

Eric : My name is Viktor.

Becky: Again, all you have to do is replace the name. Now try saying “My name is
Viktor.”

{pause}

Eric : My name is Viktor.

Becky: Now it's time for a quiz.

Becky: Imagine you're visiting the United States and someone asks you your name.
Your name is Lisa. How will you answer?

Eric : What is your name? (five seconds) My name is Lisa.

Becky: Now your name is Peter. Respond to the question again.

Becky: Imagine your name is Sarah. Answer the speaker's question.

Eric : What is your name? (five seconds) My name is Sarah.

Becky: Imagine your name is Viktor. How will you respond?

Eric : What is your name? (five seconds) My name is Viktor.

Becky: Now imagine that you want to learn that person's name. Ask the question.

(5 seconds)

Eric : What is your name?

{pause}

Becky: Now it's time to answer the question with your own name. Be sure to practice
out loud!

Eric: What is your name?
