COURSE OUTLINE
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is the intensive Japanese course designed for students who have already
acquired intermediate communication skills with intermediate grammar, vocabulary and writing system
including approximately 850 kanji. Aiming for proficiency and application skills of the upper intermediate level
to ensure smooth transition to the advanced level, the course focuses on the reading and writing skills by learning
a variety of written-style expressions and more complex structures with a wide range of authentic materials on
Japanese life, culture, society, and current topics. The course also involves a variety of activities, group tasks
and project work that include access to authentic texts, audio, visual materials as well as interaction with others
in and out of class. Students will learn approximately 350 (cumulative 1,200) kanji for production and/or
recognition toward the subsequent study of the advanced level. Ten 100-minute classes a week.
PREREQUISITES: JPN211, 250, 270 or equivalent by Japanese Placement Test.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The course is divided into three skill classes to enable students to develop four
language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing:
1. Grammar/Reading:
a. Mastery of intermediate-level grammar.
b. Development of vocabulary and expressions.
c. Reading various types of Japanese text on a range of topics.
d. Expanding and deepening knowledge of Japanese society and culture.
2. Speaking/Writing:
a. Talking in appropriate speech styles.
b. Talking and writing about ourselves, people and things around us.
c. Talking and writing about our past experiences and opinions.
d. Communicating and exchanging information with others.
e. Discussing a range of topics.
f. Giving presentations and writing essays on social issues with data cited.
3. Kanji/Vocabulary:
a. Mastery of reading & writing intermediate-level kanji.
b. Expansion of kanji vocabulary usage.
c. Perception of kanji through dictation.

d. Having own strategies to memorize kanji and to build vocabulary.
e. Understanding news articles effectively using knowledge of kanji.
To achieve the above goals, this course requires good study habits and active class participation. The course
work involves lesson tests, quizzes, daily homework assignments and a variety of class activities including
discussion, speech, and presentation.

GRADING: The scale for the final course grade is as follows:
A: 90~100 B: 80~89 C: 70~79 D: 60~69 F: 0~59

** The student who failed may repeat the same course only once. The previous record
will not be deleted from the transcript.
The final course grade will be calculated based on the scores of three different skill classes with the total
attendance & class participation score.

COURSE POLICIES
1. 出席 Attendance:

なる)と、クラスの出席点と参加点(成績の10%)が0になります。

In language courses at Center for Language Education and Research, a minimum of 85% attendance is
required for credit.
– If a student’s absences exceed 10% (14 times) of the entire lessons, the student will lose points for
“Attendance” and “Class participation” (10% of the overall grade) in the final course grade.
– If a student’s absences exceed 15% (21 times) of the entire lessons, the student will automatically FAIL
the course.
– Arriving late by 30 minutes or more or leaving early by 30 minutes or more will count as one absence.
Three times of arriving late by 15 minutes or leaving early over 15 minutes will count as one absence.

Special Consideration on Attendance: If a student fails to attend a class due to illness or injury and
submits a medical certificate stating the dates on which s/he is unable to attend, the special consideration
on attendance will apply and the absences during the period will be excluded, up to a total of three weeks,
from her/his attendance record. If a student has chronic medical conditions or concerns and cannot specify
the periods of leave due to illness or injury, s/he should consult the CLER office ([email protected])
as soon as possible. Note that quizzes, tests which a student missed during the special consideration period
are assigned as homework, and if s/he fails to submit them by the due date, the special consideration is
revoked. Also, any homework assigned during the special consideration period must be submitted by the
deadline, and if s/he fails to submit it, her/his special consideration is revoked.

必ず新しい語や文法項目を予習したうえで授業に参加し、授業では積極的に他の学生と意見や疑問点
の共有をしてください。
Class participation refers to your active participation in class with preparation, such as examining
unfamiliar words and reading through explanations of grammar in the textbook, and to sharing your
thoughts and questions with other participants.
3. 宿題:

Homework assignments must be submitted on Moodle by each deadline.

Half credit will be given for the late homework assignments submitted by the last day of each unit.

c. 遅れて出す場合は、先生に連絡して Moodle の再オープンをしてもらうことが必要です。
If you want to submit it after the deadline, you need to ask your instructor to re-open the assignment
on Moodle.

4. 試験/テスト/クイズ:

You will not be allowed to take the midterm and final exams, unit tests and daily quizzes BEFORE
the test day under any circumstances.

b. 中 間試験と期末試験は、正当な理由(病気、家族の不幸、自然災害など)がある場合だけ、make-up

No make-up for the mid-term and final exams will be given unless your instructor is informed of a
legitimate reason (e.g., sickness, injury, a death in the family) in advance. You may be requested to
submit written proof of your excuse (e.g., a doctor’s note). In case of an emergency, consult your
instructor immediately.
c. テスト/クイズの make-up は、どんな理由があっても受けることはできません。ただし、テストとクイズ

No make-up is given for missed tests and quizzes under any circumstances. Please note the lowest
score of both lesson tests and quizzes will be dropped in calculating the final grade.

A student who exhibits improper behavior during the Mid-term exam will be given zero on the exam. If a
student engages in such behavior during the Final exam, the F grade will be entered on the student’s record
and his/her dishonesty will be notified to his/her home university.

6. ChatGPT 等の AI チャットボットの使用について:
リアクションペーパー、レポート、作文等の課題で、ChatGPT 等の AI チャットボットが生成した文章は本人

The use of text generated by ChatGPT and other AI chatbots is not permitted on any assignments such as
reaction papers, reports, essays and compositions, as they are not created by the student themselves. If the
use is confirmed by detection tools, etc., strict measures will be taken in accordance with the University's
Disciplinary Rules on Misconduct. However, it is possible to use it within the scope of instructor’s permission.
