learn by heart
North
We can use angle facts around points and lines,
and the angle sum of triangles, to help us North - West North - East
calculate bearings in diagrams not drawn to scale.

The compass directions split the full turn into 8
South - West South - East

example
Calculate the bearing of B from C. Answer North North
Here is a
North right
angle
A C
220° 102°
Angle ACB =
A C Angle CAB = 180 - 102 - 50
220° 102° 360 - 220 - 90 B
= 28°
= 50°
B
So the bearing of B from C is 360 - 90 - 28 = 242°

learn by heart accurately.
When we are working with bearings, we often have parallel (North) lines.
This means we can use angle facts around parallel lines to calculate bearings.
Corresponding angles on Alternate angles on Co - interior angles on
parallel lines are equal. parallel lines are equal. parallel lines sum to 180°.
Back Bearing : If we know the bearing of A from B, then the back bearing is from B to A.
