UNO

 UNO is the most


important intergovernmental organization
formed on 24
October 1945 to promote international peace & co-operation.
A replacement for the ineffective league of nations, the
organization was created following the second world war to prevent
another such conflict.
 At its founding, the UN had 51 member states, now there are 193.
 The UN headquarters is situated in Manhattan, New York city
 The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary
contributions from its member
states.

• Stalin agreed to Soviet participation in
the United Nations.
• It agreed on a plan whereby all permanent
members of the organization’s Security
Council would hold veto power.
• Soviet Union, US, Britain, France and China-
recognized as ‘big powers’ and permanent
member of Security Council.
• It agreed the system of Trusteeship.

Aims and Objectives
It is outlined in the preamble of UN Charter;
1. To save the succeeding generation from
scourge of war.
2. To reaffirm faith in fundamental human
rights and in the equal rights of men and
women.
3. To protect international law and treatise.
4. To promotes social progress and better
standards of life in larger freedom
