Instructions for RX3i I/O Module Web/HTTP Firmware Upgrade

Instructions for Upgrading

PACSystems RX3i I/O Modules
With New Firmware Using Web/HTTP
Introduction
Some PACSystems RX3i I/O modules contain operating firmware stored in flash memory. New firmware is
provided in upgrade kits that are available as:
• A ZIP file download from https://www.emerson.com/Industrial-Automation-Controls/support, containing
the upgrade files. The ZIP file does not require unzipping prior to performing a Web/HTTP firmware
upgrade.
Some RX3i Controllers provides support for upgrading RX3i I/O Modules using Web/HTTP 1 . If your RX3i
Controller does not support Web/HTTP firmware update functionality, you need to follow the instructions
(included in the upgrade kit) for updating the I/O Module’s firmware using WinLoader, which is also included in
the upgrade kit.

Before You Begin

1. If OEM Protection in your PACSystems RX3i Controller is Locked, uploads and downloads of the application
logic, hardware configuration, and initial/forced values can be performed only by personnel who have the
OEM Key. If you are an end user, please contact your OEM to arrange for a firmware upgrade.
2. The revision of the Important Product Information (IPI) document that applies to this firmware upgrade is
included in this upgrade kit. Please read the IPI to understand how the changes in this upgrade will impact
your application.
3. Read the Upgrade Instructions included in the I/O module’s upgrade kit and follow any directions that are
specific to the I/O module you are planning to upgrade. There may be specific actions that must be done to
the RX3i Controller or the I/O module, prior to the upgrade, to ensure the upgrade is successful.

1
At this point of time, below RX3i controllers provides support for upgrading RX3i I/O Modules using Web/HTTP.

Firmware Upgrade Instructions

1. Copy the firmware upgrade ZIP file to any directory on your PC.
2. Use programming software or the controller’s Run/Stop switch (if enabled in the hardware configuration) to
place the RX3i Controller module in Stop Disabled mode.
3. If your PC uses a proxy server, it may be necessary to modify your Network Settings to disable the proxy
server (or disable use of automatic proxy configuration scripts).
4. Open a browser window and go to the PACSystems RX3i Controller’s homepage using the IP address
assigned to the controller’s embedded LAN 1 or LAN2 Ethernet ports3. (e.g. http://192.168.0.100)
Note: If redundancy is configured, you must use the controller’s direct IP address, NOT the redundant IP
address.
Note: Your PC needs to have one of its network interfaces on the same network as the RX3i Controller.
5. You may be prompted for a user name. If you are prompted for a user name, enter “update” (without the
quotes).
6. You will be prompted for a password. Enter the password that has been assigned to this specific unit. The
default password is “sierra” (without the quotes). Click on Log On.
NOTE: It is STRONGLY recommended to change the password from the default. See Resetting the
Firmware Update Password below.
7. Click on “Choose File” and navigate to the location of the firmware update ZIP file obtained and saved
earlier. Select the file and click “Open”.
8. Use programming software to get the Rack and Slot values of the RX3i I/O Module you intend to update.
Change the Rack and Slot values on the Firmware Update web page to specify the location of the module
that is to receive the firmware upgrade.
9. Click on “Upload File” to get the file upload started. The RX3i Controller’s Firmware Update web page will
indicate the upload progress. Note that the module will enter boot mode and blink several LEDs green in
unison during the upgrade process.
10. The firmware upgrade process may take up to four minutes to complete depending on the module being
upgraded. Do not power cycle the RX3i Controller during the update process as this may place the
module being updated in an unrecoverable and unusable state. Once the file upload is completed, RX3i
I/O modules will automatically reset. However, 90-30 modules (modules with IC693 or IC694 prefixes) do
not typically auto-reset after a firmware upgrade and must be power-cycled4.
11. When the firmware upgrade completes successfully the browser will remain on the Firmware Update web
page and will indicate that the upgrade process is complete. Note: The processing is complete when the
DONE status is displayed.
12. If the firmware upgrade is not successful, a Firmware Update Status page is displayed with an error status.
See the Common Causes of Failure section to determine how to correct the problem.
13. When you have successfully completed the firmware upgrade:
• Close your browser window.
• Mark or label your RX3i I/O Module to indicate the new firmware version. Ensure the label does not
cover any vents.
14. Return the RX3i Controller to Run Enabled mode using the programming software or the Run/Stop switch (if
enabled in the hardware configuration). Verify that the RUN LED is on solid GREEN.

3
The number of LANs supported by the Controllers may vary with the model. Some controllers may have a single ethernet port and some
may use switched ethernet ports. For example, RX3i CPE302/305/310-BXXX supports only one LAN and has switched ethernet ports (ETH1
and ETH2).
4
Using the Device Information Details in PME to view a module’s firmware revision information does not show the updated firmware version
until after a power-cycle. Device Information Details are accessed via the Show Status Online Command.

Resetting the Firmware Update Password

The controller unit ships with a default firmware update password of “sierra” (without quotes). It is STRONGLY
recommended to change this password, as follows:

1. If your computer uses a proxy server, it may be necessary to modify your Network Settings to disable the
proxy server (or disable use of automatic proxy configuration scripts).
2. Use programming software or the controller’s Run/Stop switch (if enabled in the hardware configuration) to
place the RX3i Controller module in Stop Disabled mode.
3. Open a browser window and go to the PACSystems RX3i Controller’s homepage using the IP address
assigned to the controller’s embedded LAN 1 or LAN 2 Ethernet ports5. (e.g. http://192.168.0.100)
4. At the PACSystems RX3i Controller’s homepage, select the Administrator button in the top right-hand corner
and select the ‘Reset Password’ option. Dismiss any security warnings the browser may present indicating
the certificate is not issued by a known certificate authority. The certificate is dynamically generated by the
firmware on each power cycle (i.e. the certificate is self-signed).
5. The password reset depends on the Controller model type. The push button present on the module front
panel is used for password reset process. Push button used might be different for each Controller model. For
example,
a) Password reset for CPE3306 (using RDSD UPLD button).
b) Password reset for CPE302/305/310-BXXX (using PHY PRES button).
6. Press the password reset push button on the unit as directed until the page updates.
7. Release the password reset push button on the unit as directed.
8. Enter the new firmware update password and confirm it by entering it a second time. Press OK. The unit will
save the password and return to the homepage. The rules for the password are displayed on the screen.

5
The number of LANs supported by the Controllers may vary with the model. Some controllers may have a single ethernet port and some
may use switched ethernet ports. For example, RX3i CPE302/305/310-BXXX supports only one LAN and has switched ethernet ports (ETH1
and ETH2).
6
Make sure all devices are removed from the USB port. Pressing the RDSD UPLD button while a device is inserted into the USB port will
begin an upload sequence from the controller to the device.
