EASTER TRADITIONS IN ENGLAND

GOOD FRIDAY: It’s the first day of Easter holidays. It celebrates the
crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

HOT CROSS BUNS: Sweet small bread made of flour, eggs and fruit, with a
cross at the top.

PALM SUNDAY: This feast celebrates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Palm
Sunday marks the first day of Holy Week.

EASTER SUNDAY: This Sunday Christians celebrate the resurrection of

Jesus Christ. In England there are ‘egg hunts’.

EASTER EGGS: It means that life comes back -after winter- in spring.
People decorate eggs. They are used as gifts. Nowadays most of them are
made of chocolate for children.

EASTER BUNNY: It’s a rabbit that brings a basket with Easter eggs and
candies to children like Santa Claus brings present at Christmas. The rabbit
hides the eggs in gardens, and children must find them.

EGG HUNT: Children typically collect the eggs that Easter Bunny hid in a basket. When the
hunt is over, parents will give prizes for the largest number of eggs collected, for the
largest or smallest egg...

MARK’S EASTER HOLIDAYS

Hello, my name is Mark. I live near London, and I study in a Primary School here. I am on
holidays for two weeks. My Easter holidays start this Friday, but first let me tell you a
little bit more about me. I live in a house with a nice small garden in front of it with another
bigger garden at the back. We are four people in my family, my father, my mother, my little
brother James and me.

Easter is very important for my family. It starts today with ‘Good Friday’, when according
to the Catholic tradition, Jesus Christ was put to death. Easter is about the celebration of
the Resurrection of Christ on the third day after his death. At the moment I have just
come back from school and I am drinking tea and eating some ‘hot cross buns’ that mum has
made. This is a strong tradition here in England.

Then, on ‘Easter Sunday’ we go to church in the morning for mass. The church is full of
people on that day. We also went to church last Sunday for ‘Palm Sunday’.
My aunt, uncle and cousins will come next Sunday to have lunch. We will have roast lamb
with vegetables (roast potatoes and peas) and an Easter cake or cupcakes.

My parents are going to hide ‘Easter eggs’ (the eggs we painted and others made of
chocolate) in our back garden.‘Easter Bunny’ is supposed to hide them. Later my brother,
my cousins and I are going to look for them there. I hope it will be sunny, the TV weather
forecast says it will be fine but in Spring you never know, it could rain a bit and it could ruin
the day.

That day we will do the ‘eggs hunt’, and this year my mother told me to let the younger
children get most of these [Link] in the afternoon, we will have tea while eating our
chocolate eggs and other sweets. I am happy because my cousin Amy is going to stay with us
during the first week of the holiday and I’m sure we will enjoy our Easter break.
