BIOSC 102 Exam 3 Study Guide

This study packet for BIOSC 102 Exam 3 covers key concepts in cell division, genetics, and protein synthesis. It includes questions on mitosis vs meiosis, the impact of maternal age on aneuploidy, transcription and translation processes, blood type inheritance, and genetic traits in hypothetical organisms. The packet also provides a grading rubric for assessment.

EXAM 3 STUDY PACKET

BIOSC 102 Section 1296 Spring 2025

Name _____________________________________________

1. Fill in the table comparing/contrasting mitosis and meiosis.

MITOSIS MEIOSIS

# of rounds of DNA replication

# of rounds of division

Resulting cell type

Resulting cell ploidy

# of resulting cells

2. Why does increased maternal age cause a higher chance of aneuploidy (an atypical number
of chromosomes, for example Trisomy 21, aka Down Syndrome)? Hint: when it comes to
animal eggs, there is an important over-simplification in the last row of the table above.

3. Label the diagram using the scrambled terms in the word bank.

Metaphase Prophase Telophase Anaphase

4. Which phase of the cell cycle is not pictured/listed? Hint: Most cells spend the majority of
their lives in this phase.

5. Label the diagram using the terms in the word bank. Is this transcription or translation ?

codon tRNA ribosome amino acid

dehydration complementary
methionine/start
synthesis sequences

6. Using the codon table, transcribe and then translate the following “gene.” Remember that
RNA uses uracil (U) instead of thymine (T) and pay attention to the orientation of the RNA
molecule.

DNA 3' TAC GGG CTC GGT TGA TAG CTG CTT ACT 5'
RNA
Protein

7. Ignoring the fact that it’s too short, is the “gene” above eukaryotic or prokaryotic ?
How do you know? Hint: what feature is missing from the DNA sequence?

8. The ABO blood type gene, which is not sex-linked, has three alleles. IA and IB are
codominant; i (for Type O) is recessive to both. Mrs. Smith has Type A blood and Mr. Smith
has Type B. They have four children. Sally has Type A, Harry has Type B, Jane has Type
AB, and the baby, Bobby, has Type O. What are the genotypes of all six people in this
family? A blank Punnett Square is provided for your convenience, but you may not need it.
Mr. Smith:

Mrs. Smith:

Sally:

Harry:

Jane:

Baby Bobby:

9. Mrs. Jones has blood type A. Mr. Jones has blood type B. They have two children: the older
one has blood type AB, and the younger one has blood type O. Mr. Smith accuses Mrs.
Smith of being unfaithful to him.
a. Is he justified?
b. What are Mr. and Mrs. Jones’ genotypes for this gene? Again, here’s a blank Punnett
square if needed.
Mr. Jones:

Mrs. Jones:

10. Plutonian Tickle-bellies have a sex determination system just like mammals: XX
individuals are female, and XY individuals are male. Hairy Snout is a dominant trait
carried on the Y chromosome. MyxRotccc, a handsome male Tickle-belly, has lovely
orange hair on his snout. He and his mate, OrgggWny, have six sproggets – three boys
and three girls. Please answer the following questions about this family.
a. How many of MyxRotcccc’s and OrgggWny’s offspring have hairy snouts? Can you
predict which ones?

b. Their eldest son, SnRggg, marries and has a son. What is the chance that SnRggg’s son
will also have a hairy snout?

c. JoKchew, the youngest daughter of MyxRotcccc and OrgggWny, marries a male who
has a smooth, hairless purple snout. She has eight offspring, each one lovelier than the
last, and all boys. What percentage of these offspring do you expect to have hairy
snouts? Explain.

In case you need them:
