7 Alarm System

7.1 Summarize
As an important component of human-machine interface, alarm system is responsible for collecting,
processing and displaying alarm information of DCS system. When a fault occurs, the alarm system notifies
operating personnel through visual and sound signals, the operating personnel may judge urgency of the alarm and
promptly take appropriate measures to eliminate the fault, according to the different types of alarm signals. It
together with the power plant process control system monitor the whole plant running state, it is an important
window of operating personnel understanding the whole plant operation.
Alarm system is made up of logic layer, data service layer and presentation layer
Logic layer of alarm system is the alarm logic configuration in DPU, generation and recognition of alarm
data can be fully synchronized, and alarm server configuration can be cancelled in the system. Since the alarm is
generated in DPU, complex alarm requirements can be implemented according to the actual process needs, the
unwanted alarm information can be reduced in the system.
According to eNet agreement, data service layer completes functions of accessing alarm data from DPU, data
processing, alarm analysis, and ultimately providing data services for presentation layer. Data service layer is the
bridge between logic layer and presentation layer in NT6000 alarm system.
Presentation layer of alarm system is user interface, which reads alarm information provided by eNet and
indicates the running status of the current alarm unit, according to four color combinations of whether to have
alarm and whether to confirm the alarm status. Alarm system provides a filter to show only some concerned alarm
information, the others remain in memory and can be read from memory when needed, the current alarm filter
modes include by alarm zone (such as boiler alarm zone) , by time, by Tag (such as an important equipment) and
so on.

7.2 Alarm Classification

NT6000 has two types of alarms:
Hardware Alarm: the system hardware alarm, including hardware equipment diagnostic information of DPU
exit synchronous, DPU network disconnection, communication bus of the card failures, industrial computer
network failures, system power failures, switch port failures and so on.
Process Alarm: alarms of the process parameters’ higher, high, low, lower limits and equipment alarm
information generated in the running process, including state failure, switch (start and stop) time-out, command
refusal, mandatory refusal, external fault.

7.3 Alarm Area

NT6000 system provides 256 alarm areas, from the A001 to A256, alarm area A256 is the default system
hardware alarm area, and the remaining 255 alarm areas can be freely classified according to the process system.

40
NT6000 GraphX Manual
7.4 Alarm Priority
The priority applies to all the alarms. Alarm priority manages the order of alarm display, identification and
activation.
0 is the lowest priority, 500 is the highest priority.

7.5 Alarm Setting

As described in section 6.3 alarm configuration, the left mouse button double-click on the alarm control, you
can set the alarm control property, as shown in Figure 7.1.

Figure 7.1 Alarm control property window

Property setting includes Common Settings and Row and Column Settings, instructions are as follows:
1. Common Settings:
(1) Event Color: Font color and background color are shown in the case of whether to have alarm and
whether to confirm the alarm status, ‘yellow font, red background’ is the default settings when an alarm occurs,
‘black font, green background’ when the alarm has been confirmed. Alarm priority settings mainly distinguish the
priority range by setting this value. Set different colors according to different alarm priorities, which have 2 levels,
1-749 is the general alarm, the default color is ‘yellow background, red font’, 750-1000 is the fault alarm, the
default color is ‘red background, yellow font’, you can set alarm priority value, click the settings button, the
pop-up interface is shown in Figure 7.2:

Figure 7.2 Alarm Priority Setting

If you set alarm priority value 800, the alarm priority levels are divided into 1-799 and 800-1000.
(2) Time Setting: When no alarm confirmation occurs, the interval time of alarm flashing can be set by ‘Flash
interval’; Confirm delay interval indicates alarm information becomes ‘black font A green background’
immediately when alarm disappears, and the alarm information disappears from the alarm picture after the delay
interval.
(3) Interface display: This option is used for setting whether to display ‘Filter’, ‘ Property’, ‘Confirm’,
‘ Confirm Screen’ and other control buttons when AlarmX Control is running, users can also set background color
and font color of button by this option.
2. Row and Column Settings: In the ‘Row property settings’ you can set tags on the alarm picture and font
format of alarm information. In the ‘Column property settings’ you can configure columns of information that
control needs to display, including ‘Computer’, ‘User’, ‘Time ‘,’Tag Description’, ‘Type’, ‘Priority’, ‘Alarm
Zone’, ‘Confirm time’ and so on.

7.6 Alarm Confirm

Alarm confirmation is completed in the presentation layer, including ‘Confirm’ and ‘Confirm Screen’.
‘Confirm’ means to confirm according to an alarm no-confirm information selected by the presentation layer, if
the alarm persists after confirmation, the alarm state switch from flash to plain, if the alarm has disappeared, then
after a period of time (time can be set by the operating personnel) alarm information automatically disappears.
‘Confirm Screen’ means to confirm all the information of visible region in presentation layer, automatically
calculate the visible region and the location of data in memory according to the scroll bar position and complete
all the confirmation, the color change process of each alarm is the same as ‘Confirm’.
Confirm has two ways, one is to click directly the ‘Confirm’ or ‘Confirm Screen’ button on the control, and
the second is to choose an alarm information, click the right mouse button, the pop-up menu is shown in Figure
7.3, Select ‘Confirm’ or ‘ Confirm Entire Screen ‘ or ‘Confirm All’ in the menu.

Note: Alarm confirm is closely linked with operation authority, and only persons have operation authority on

42
NT6000 GraphX Manual
the alarm information can confirm alarm, for example, Operating personnel of stoker can only confirm boiler
system alarm and can not confirm the turbine alarm or the electrical alarm. If the current user does not have
permission, you are not able to confirm alarm, as shown in Figure 7.4.

7.7 Alarm Sort

You can sort alarm information according to date, time and priority of alarm, sort modes include Ascending
and Descending, check the ‘Sort’ as shown in Figure 7.3, the pop-up dialog is shown in Figure 7.5, you can also
click on the column header to sort directly. The default setting is to sort in ascending mode according to date at
first and then according to the time, the alarms that have not been confirmed are at the top of the control, the
alarms that have been confirmed but not disappeared are at the bottom.

7.8 Alarm Filter

System provides alarm filter function in running mode, check the ‘Filter’ as shown in Figure 7.3, the pop-up
dialog box is shown in Figure 7.6.
System provides four filter modes:
1. By Time: According to the start and end time of the alarm, you can filter alarm information of the current
picture.
2. By Tag Name: You can manually input the name of a tag or a device, for example, ‘ST02C0507’, you can

also select the tags or devices in the database by clicking ‘ ‘. The filter mode supports wildcards ‘*’ and ‘?’,
you can also filter by checking ‘case sensitive’.
3. By Alarm Zone: You can select one or a few alarm zone by this option, only alarm information of the
selected zone can be displayed.
4. By Priority: You can filter according to the priority of tags or the devices, it means that only the alarm in
the selected priority range can be displayed.

43

Show All: You can display all the alarm information and shield all the previous filter settings by this
function.
