STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I am an Indian Medical Graduate with a deep passion for global health, preventive health and
social medicine. Coming from a medical background, I am excited and keen to study global
health as I am eager to further my understanding and develop the aptitude to make a
memorable impact on global healthcare.
I was fascinated by medicine and healthcare right from school as I was inspired by interacting
with several doctors. I developed a strong interest in science and biology during high school
and I chose to pursue the science stream in senior high school. I felt my love and
understanding for science broaden and deepen during those years. I was fascinated by the
human body and the noble medical field and its ability to cure diseases and improve the
lifestyle and well-being of millions of people. After graduating high school when it came to
making the crucial career choice, I decided to pursue medicine as my passion and calling.
My childhood dream was fulfilled when I graduated in medicine in 2020 from ESIC Medical
College affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. I have cleared most of my
medical exams in First class and excelled in subjects like Biochemistry and Community
Medicine. I was particularly interested in community medicine and always went out of my
way to learn more about this field. After my final year, I practiced medicine in diverse
clinical settings in Karnataka and I have witnessed firsthand the complex social problems of
people and disparities in healthcare delivery.
My medical training has equipped me with a deep understanding of disease prevention,
treatment methods, and patient care. I have worked in Out-patient departments and primary
health centres across my city and gained many insights into the various aspects of disease and
health. Hence, I recognize the importance of addressing the social aspects of health and
implementing preventive strategies to reduce disease burden. These experiences have lit the
fire inside me to pursue global health and social medicine to effect everlasting change.
During my internship in 2019-2020 in ESIC Medical College, I was posted to the Dept. of
Community Medicine for two months. During this time, I actively participated in community
health camps, awareness campaigns and immunisation drives organised by the college. I have
worked with a team of batchmates to organise public health campaigns and mobile clinics
across my city. I have also given talks at various community health centres on sanitation and
healthy living for which I was genuinely appreciated by my teachers and senior doctors.
I worked as Resident Doctor at Aryan Hospital, Bangalore for one year in 2022. During this
time, I was assigned to the OPD, casualty and medicine wards. I interacted with patients from
diverse socio-economic conditions and conducted patient counselling to improve health and
lifestyle. I could see the need to address the social, cultural and mental aspects of health. I
realised that local and global health issues need to be tackled with similar zeal and passion.
Hence, I decided to transition from clinical practice to global public health so that I can
contribute more to health and wellness.
My interest in this graduate program stems from a deep-rooted commitment to advancing
healthcare and addressing healthcare disparities across the globe. I believe that global health
plays a crucial role in healthcare and improving indicators like maternal and child mortality. I
would like to learn how various social and cultural barriers to health can be overcome. I
would love to delve deeper into these fields and gain knowledge and insights into global
health and social medicine to improve the well-being of different populations across the
world.
The opportunity to study at a great institution like King’s College London in the UK excites
me, as I am keen to learn from renowned faculty members and diverse colleagues who are at
the forefront of global health innovation. I am inspired by the vibrant multicultural
environment in English Universities that allows students to work together and provides great
scope for personality development. I am eager to contribute with my unique perspective and
ideas as an Indian clinician to the diverse cohort of your graduate program. I believe I can
contribute with my real-world insights and understanding of healthcare delivery in
developing countries. I am excited to collaborate and team-up with peers from diverse
backgrounds, as I believe taking multiple inputs and exchanging ideas will culminate in the
best solutions to address global health challenges.
Upon completion of the Master's program, I want to use my medical skills and global health
knowledge to contribute to healthcare, welfare initiatives, and disease prevention efforts in
rural and urban health centres in India and the world. I aim to bridge the gap between local
and global healthcare systems as I am committed to innovative and equitable healthcare. I
would also like to set up clinics to address holistic health in developing countries in the near
future. I am confident that the knowledge, skills and learning that I take back from this
program will enable me to drive positive change and promote health and welfare of people in
my home country and the world at large.
I am committed to utilise this experience to be a leader for global health especially in
developing countries. I look forward to the opportunity to learn, grow and collaborate with
incredible likeminded people. We can create a world where global health and social justice is
not just an ideal but a reality.
