You are able to define multiple Internet Connections. Be sure to mark the connection as
active if you intend to use it. Only “Active” connections can be used for “Auto Switching”.
Inactive internet connection can also be assigned to Ethernet ports but the port will not
be activated as long as the network is not marked as “Active”.
Default Internet Connection
Check the “Set as default Internet Connection” checkbox if you want this network to be
your primary internet connection. The network will get the priority 1 (default). Only one
active network definition can be marked as default.
Priority
The priority defines the order in which your internet connections will be used if “Auto
Switching” is enabled. If auto switching is disabled only the internet connection with the
priority “default” will be used. When adding a new network, the priority will be set
automatically. The priorities can be changed within the “Auto Switching” screen.

Ping IP: In order to test the availability, an arbitrary public IP address will
need to be pinged periodically to check the online status of the
internet connection.
The IP address can be set individually for each network. Make
sure to use an address which is usually always available and does
not refuse ping requests. The default ping IP address is set to
8.8.8.8 which fulfills these criteria.
Ping Interval: Specifies the interval in seconds that the network will be checked
for online status. This is also the maximum time it takes to detect

if a network is not available. Default value is 300 seconds (5
minutes).
Switch Delay: The switch delay defines the time in seconds to wait before
switching the network if it was found to be unavailable. This
might be useful if an internet connection is only down for a few
moments or temporary unavailable to prevent back and forth
switching loop. Default value is 300 seconds (5 minutes).
2.5 Port Settings
After you have defined all required networks, you can now associate networks with
hardware interfaces (ports).
The web interface displays the current assignment of ports to networks and allows
modifications of assignments. The picture shows the default assignment of ports. The
satellite connection is by default assigned to “LAN 1”, and is labeled according to your
terminal type.

3.4 URL Filter
The URL filter gives you the ability to filter your internet traffic by URL or domain names.
You have the choice to either explicitly allow or deny websites. The allow list and the
block list cannot be used simultaneously.
3.5 Allow/Block URLs
The web filter expects each entry (URL / domain name) one per line. You can either type
the complete URL (e.g. www.example.com) or parts of a domain (e.g. .cnn.com).
www.example.com
.cnn.com
.com
The first example (www.example.com) will explicitly block or allow only the domain
(www.example.com) whereas the second one will affect all domains ending with the
specified part (e.g. .cnn.com will block/allow cnn.com, edition.cnn.com, or us.cnn.com).
The third one will block/allow all sites ending in “.com”
Note that each domain entry must proceeded by a dot or begin with “www”.
Here are some other examples for valid filter entries:
www.google.de
.co.uk
.ask.com
You can also upload a list of allowed sites from a text document. To upload using a text
document click the "Browse" button, navigating to the document to upload then select
"Upload".

3.6 Saving of Settings
No changes are applied to the system until you click the “Apply” button displayed after
you have made changes. If you want to undo your changes click “Discard”.
3.7 Word Filter
You can block access to websites based on keywords. All websites will be searched
against this list and will be blocked if they contain at least one of the words. The word
filter can be used in conjunction with the URL filtering.
Here are some examples for valid filter entries:
right - matches to word <right> and words like <bright>, <frightening>, <rightful>,
etc.
"right" - matches to a word <right> only.
sweet home - matches to phrases <home sweet home>, <sweet homeland>, but
not "sweet neat home"
"sweet home" - matches to phrases <sweet home>, <home sweet home> but not
<sweet homeland>
You can add keywords by typing them one per line in the browser window or upload a list
from a text document.
To upload using a text document click the "Browse" button, navigating to the document
to upload then select "Upload Filter File".
3.8 Saving of Settings
No changes are applied to the system until you click the “Apply” button displayed after
you have made changes. If you want to undo your changes click “Discard”.
3.9 Media Filter
You can block images, video, or audio content using this filter. Blocked content will not
be shown in web pages. Depending on your preference it is possible to block individual
file types or the entire category.
Globecomm Maritime a division of Globecomm.
- 21 -
www.globecomm.com
Nimbus User Guide – Version 2
Click the “Apply” button to store the filters or press the “Discard” button to undo the
changes.
3.10 Web Cache
By default, caching is enabled for all websites to reduce data traffic. However, there are a
number of websites where caching of content might impede delivery of current
information, e.g. weather sites. This filter allows you to specify sites that should be
exempt from caching. Alternatively you can disable caching for all sites.
This filter expects each entry (URL / domain name) one per line. You can either type the
complete URL (e.g. www.example.com) or parts of a domain (e.g. .weather.com).
Using partial domain names disables web caching for every domain ending with the given
entry. For example, the entry ".weather.com" disables web caching for domains like
"europe.weather.com", "usa.weather.com", etc. Note that each domain entry must
proceeded by a dot or begin with “www”.
Here are some examples for valid filter entries:
www.oceanweather.com
.noaa.gov
.weather.com
You can also upload a list of sites from a text document. To upload using a text
document click the "Browse" button, navigating to the document to upload then select
"Upload".
3.11 Saving of Settings

2.1 DHCP Server
The Nimbus as the central communication device is a router, firewall and server. It acts
as Gateway and DNS Server. Typically Nimbus is also the DHCP Server for your network.
However, you may re-configure Nimbus to use an existing DHCP server on your network
(advanced).
Use internal DHCP Server
This is the recommended option. For this setup you have to disable any existing DHCP
Server on your network.
Use existing DHCP Server on your Network
Configure your DHCP Server according to this table:
Step Description How to
1 Disable DHCP Server of Nimbus See “Add / Edit Local Area Network
entry”
2 Get IP Address of the Nimbus See “Add / Edit Local Area Network

V. SYSTEM RESET
The Nimbus system is designed to provide flexible network configurations. To avoid
address conflicts addresses are automatically verified by the system.
However, not all conflicts and potential problems can be recognized automatically. For
those cases, the Nimbus configuration can accessed directly by cable and/or reset.
1. Web-Interface not reachable
If the Nimbus inadvertently has been configured in a way that the web-interface cannot
be reached anymore from a PC in the network, you may still access it directly using a
cable between your computer and the Nimbus.
Using a network cable, connect
your PC to the right most port of
the Nimbus. Configure your PC
network settings to obtain an IP
Address automatically (DHCP).
You can now access the web
interface to re-configure the
Nimbus.
2. Reset
You may reset your Nimbus by using a pointed device to press the “Reset” button on the
back of the Nimbus. This will reload the initial default network and port configurations
from the shore server.
Press the button until you hear a beep, release the button and press the button again
within 10 seconds. A long beep confirms the reset. The Nimbus will restart automatically.
Please note that it will take approximately 20 minutes for the device to sync with the
shore server after a reset.
