A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE

By: Jarid Ceasar B. Lequisen

I. Learning Outcomes

At the end of the period, the students are able to:

 Describe the changes due to volcanic eruptions.

 Explain the effects of volcanic eruption.
 Identify the parts of the volcano.

II. Subject Matter

Title: Volcanic Eruption
Reference: CO_Q4 Science 6_Module 1A
Science 6 Curriculum Guide, S6ES-IVa-1
Instructional Materials: Laptop, TV, Chalk, Blackboard, Eraser
Lesson Strategies: Lesson Discussion, Example Demonstration, and Formative Assessment
Values Integration: Be prepared well in inevitable calamites such us volcanic eruption.
F. Strategies: Cooperative Learning

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity
I. Preliminary Activity
1. Prayer
“Before we start our lesson, let us start
with the prayer. May I request everyone
to please stand. _________ please lead
the prayer.” (Recite the prayer) Amen.

2. Greetings
“Good afternoon, class!” “Good afternoon, Sir CJ.”
“How’s your lunch?” “Good, sir.

3. Classroom Management
“Before you take your seats, please
arrange the chairs properly and pick up
pieces of papers.” (Students will do as told.)

“You may now take your seats.” (Students then will take their seats.)

“May I know who is absent today?” “None sir.”

4. Checking of Assignments
“Did I give you an assignment last
meeting?” “Yes, sir.”

“Alright, pass all your papers to the front

and ________, please collect all your
assignments.” (Students will do as told.)

5. Drill
“Alright class, what was the topic all
about last meeting?” (Students will raise their hands.)

(Teacher will call someone to answer.) “The previous topic is all about Earth’s
Layers.”

“Very good, now what are the layers of

the Earth?” “Crust, Upper Mantle, Middle Mantle, Lower
Mantle, Outer Core, and Inner Core.”
Excellent. Now, what is an earthquake?”
“An earthquake is the vibration or shaking of
the earth’s crust caused by the sudden
movement of plates that release large amount
of energy.”
“Alright, what are the types of
earthquakes?”
“Tectonic earthquake, volcanic earthquake, and
man-made earthquakes.”
“Very good. Do you have any questions
before we proceed to our new topic?”
“None sir.”

6. Motivation
“Before we begin our discussion, I want
you to watch this video and after that,
explain it to the class on what you have
just saw.”

(Teacher will play the video.)

“Alright class, what was the video all

about?”
“It is a volcanic eruption caught on camera.”

“What do you think of that volcanic

eruption?” “It is violent and scary.”

“If you are in the shoes of that person

taking a video, what will you do?” “Hide or get away there fast.”

II. Presentation of the Lesson Plan

A. Lesson Proper
“Our topic for today is all about
Volcanoes. Alright class, what is a
volcano? Everyone please read.”
“What is a volcano? A volcano is an opening
in the earth’s crust where lava pyro clasts, and
gases are ejected on the surface during the
eruptions. A volcano is a landform; it may be a
hill, a mountain, a plateau, or just a fissure in
the earth’s crust.”
“Thank you, the volcano is an opening
from the earth’s crust. That means to say
it is also the gateway where the land
meets the molten rock or magma in the
surface. Just imagine a soft drink bottle.
When you shake the bottle too much, it
builds up pressure. And once you open it
the contents oozes out like a volcano.
That is how the volcano works.”
“The most prominent part of the volcano
is the cone which is formed by
mountainous accumulation of volcanic
materials.”

“Meaning to say, most common shape of

the volcanoes is conical, where it shapes
like a triangle. Take the Mayon Volcano
of Albay for example. Is it conical or
not?” “Conical”

“Yes, it has the perfect cone shape of the

volcano.”

“Everyone, please read again.” “The other parts of the volcano are the crater
and the volcanic vent. The crater is a steep-
walled depression at the peak of the volcano,
and the volcanic vent is a cylindrical channel
that connects the crater or mouth of the magma
chamber.”

“Thank you, the crater is the opening

found at the mouth of the volcano. It is
the main entrance where lava would
slowly come out and make a spectacular
explosion of the volcano.”

“Some volcanoes have large craters

called calderas that can extend over 1
kilometer in diameter. Calderas are
formed when the summit of the volcano
collapses during a violent or explosive
eruption.”

“Meaning when the walls of the crater

collapse due to immense pressure from
the explosion, it will collapse completely
resulting into a huge crater that over time
gets filled with water. A concrete
example of a caldera would be taal
volcano”

“Alright, next read the following.” “Volcanoes are categorized into three groups:
dormant, extinct, and active. Dormant
volcanoes have not erupted over time, but they
could again. Extinct volcanoes have erupted
thousand of years and might be dead. Active
volcanoes have erupted recently and they
probably erupt again soon.”
“Thank you. So, the volcanoes are
differentiated into 3 groups where
dormant which means it’s still sleeping.
Nobody knows when will it explode
again. The active which will erupt
depending on its volcanic cycle and the
extinct which it ‘might’ be dead. Class,
the keyword is might. That means to say
we don’t know.”

“So, what happens when the volcano

erupts? The magma chamber is
surrounded by solid rocks. These rocks
press on the chamber causing the gas-
filled magma to rise and comes out to
the earth’s surface through the main vent
of the volcano. Materials like rock
fragments, gas, volcanic dust, volcanic
ash and volcanic bombs or also known as
Lava blobs are ejected though the vent.”

“What would be the effects of a volcanic

eruption?”

“Everyone please read the positive

effects first.”
“There is promotion of tourism because of the
dramatic scenery created by volcanic eruption
which attract tourists.”
“It makes soil fertile.”
“New minerals are discovered.”
“Geothermal energy is created.”
“New land for human habitation is formed.”
“Alright, next the negative effects.”
“There is a great damage to life and
agricultural products.”
“The toxic gases released into the atmosphere
lead to air, water and land pollution.”
“Carbon dioxide emitted from the volcanoes
adds natural greenhouse effect.”
“It also causes changes on climate and weather
patterns.”
“There is loss of habitat”
“Human and natural landscapes can be
“Thank you, there are the different side destroyed and changed forever.”
effects if a volcanic eruption took place
in a certain location.”

B. Application
“Alright class, I want you to label these
parts of the volcano with the words from
the word bank. I’ll start labeling one
with the secondary vent.”

(Students will raise their hands and point out

where they will put the label on the TV
“Alright, very good. Everyone.” screen.)

C. Generalization
“Now what is a volcano again?” (Student raises their hand.)

“Yes ______. What is a volcano?” “A volcano is an opening in the earth’s crust

where lava, pyro clasts, and gases are ejected
onto the surface during an eruption.”
“Very good. What are the three
categories of volcanoes?
(Student raises their hand.)

“Yes ________, what is your answer?” “They are dormant, extinct and active.”

“Alright last question. What are the 3

Major parts of the volcano?”
(Students raises their hand.)
“Yes ________.
“Cone, crater, and Volcanic vent.”
“Very good. Do you have any questions
before we proceed with our activity?” “None so far sir.”

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Enumerate the following.

________1. Is an opening of the earth’s crust where lava, pyro clasts, and gases ejected onto the
surface of the eruption.
________2. They are craters that can exceed over one kilometer in diameter.
________3. It is formed by mountainous accumulation of volcanic materials.
________4. They are volcanoes that have erupted for thousands of years and might be dead.
________5. Is a cylindrical channel that connects the crater or mouth of the magma chamber.

V. Assignment
Find any news clippings or pictures from the internet about a recent volcanic eruption from years
2016 to 2025.
