Trumpet High Note Development Routine
1. Warm-Up (10-15 minutes)
- Long Tones: Start on low C and hold for 8-10 seconds, gradually ascending chromatically.
- Lip Bends: Play middle G and bend it slightly downward, then back up for flexibility.
2. Lip Slurs (10-15 minutes)
- Start with slow slurs between two partials (C4 to G4 to C5 and back).
- Increase difficulty with wider interval slurs (G4 to D5 to G5).
3. Scales & Arpeggios (10 minutes)
- Play major scales ascending at least to high C.
- Practice arpeggios (C-E-G-C, G-B-D-G, etc.) for accuracy.
4. High Note Squeak Practice (5-10 minutes)
- Play a soft, high G or higher using minimal embouchure movement.
- Think of whistling with lips, using fast air instead of force.
5. Range Expansion Exercises (5 minutes)
- Start on high G and hold it for 4-5 seconds, gradually expanding upward.
- Avoid straining; use proper air support.
6. Cool-Down (5 minutes)
- Play long tones in the low register (low C, low G, low F).
- Practice descending lip slurs from high to low notes.
Key Tips for Success:
- Stay Relaxed: Tension kills high notes. Keep your throat open.
- Less Pressure: Avoid pressing the mouthpiece too hard.
- Use Faster Air: Think 'blow through the trumpet' instead of pushing notes.
- Rest As Much As You Play: Overuse will set you back!
