The Mysterious Case of the Missing Necklace

Characters:

Detective Langley – A sharp but quirky detective

Miss Eleanor – A wealthy woman who lost her necklace

Butler James – Miss Eleanor’s loyal but nervous servant

Emily – Miss Eleanor’s nosy niece

Mr. Thompson – A suspicious businessman

Madam Rose – A fortune teller who may know more than she lets on

Officer Riley – A police officer assisting in the investigation

Setting: A grand mansion, the living room. The furniture is elegant, and a glass display case
(now empty) sits at the center.

Scene 1: The Mystery Begins

(The curtain rises. Miss Eleanor paces the room in distress. Butler James stands nearby,
looking worried. Emily is seated, filing her nails casually.)

Miss Eleanor: (dramatically) My necklace! My priceless diamond necklace has vanished!

Butler James: (wringing hands) I swear, madam, I saw it in the case this morning!

Emily: (rolling eyes) Maybe you misplaced it, Aunt Eleanor.

(Detective Langley enters, wearing a trench coat and holding a magnifying glass.)

Detective Langley: (confidently) Fear not! Detective Langley is here to solve this most puzzling
case.

Miss Eleanor: (grabbing his arm) Detective, you must find my necklace! It’s worth a fortune!
Detective Langley: (nodding) Everyone is a suspect until proven innocent. I’ll need to ask some
questions.

Scene 2: The Suspects

(Detective Langley examines the display case with a serious expression.)

Detective Langley: (to Butler James) Where were you when the necklace went missing?

Butler James: (nervously) In the kitchen, preparing tea! I swear, I had nothing to do with it!

Emily: (smirking) That’s exactly what a guilty person would say.

Miss Eleanor: (gasping) Could it be… my own butler?

Detective Langley: (calmly) Let’s not jump to conclusions.

(Mr. Thompson enters, looking suspicious in a dark coat.)

Detective Langley: Ah-ha! And who might you be?

Mr. Thompson: (coolly) Mr. Thompson. I had a business meeting with Miss Eleanor earlier.

Emily: (mockingly) How convenient that you show up after the necklace is missing.

Mr. Thompson: (crossing arms) Are you accusing me, young lady?

Detective Langley: (writing in a notebook) I sense tension. Interesting.

(Madam Rose enters, draped in a shawl, looking mysterious.)

Madam Rose: (dramatic) The spirits whisper… The answer lies where least expected.

Miss Eleanor: (frustrated) Enough riddles, Rose! Do you know something?

Madam Rose: (smirking) Perhaps. But do you truly wish to see what is hidden?

Scene 3: The Investigation

(Detective Langley examines the room, using his magnifying glass.)

Detective Langley: (thinking) No signs of forced entry. That means… the thief is among us!
(Everyone gasps.)

Emily: (nervously) But why would any of us steal it?

Mr. Thompson: (shrugging) Some people are greedy.

Detective Langley: (narrowing eyes) Indeed. Or desperate.

(Detective Langley suddenly stops near a small table and lifts a handkerchief. Beneath it is…
the necklace!)

Miss Eleanor: (shocked) My necklace!

Butler James: (gulping) But… who put it there?

(Detective Langley slowly turns to Madam Rose.)

Detective Langley: Madam Rose… You knew where it was all along, didn’t you?

Madam Rose: (laughing softly) Perhaps the spirits led me to it.

Detective Langley: Or perhaps… you were trying to steal it and had no time to escape with it.

(Everyone stares at Madam Rose. She sighs and drops the act.)

Madam Rose: (admitting) Fine! I took it! But I only wanted to teach Miss Eleanor a lesson. She
owes me money and refuses to pay!

Miss Eleanor: (indignant) You could have just asked!

Detective Langley: A classic case of deception. Officer Riley, take her away.

(Officer Riley steps forward and takes Madam Rose by the arm. She huffs but allows herself to
be led out.)

Miss Eleanor: (relieved) Oh, Detective, you are truly brilliant!

Detective Langley: (smiling) Just another mystery solved.

(The lights fade as the case is closed.)

The End.
