CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND IT’S SCOPE

Rationale

The bond between pet owners and their pets is widely recognized as a source

of emotional support and companionship. Research indicates that pet ownership

can provide a variety of psychological benefits, including reduced stress, anxiety, and

feelings of loneliness (McConnell et al., 2011; Barker et al., 2012). However, there

remains a significant gap in qualitative research exploring how pet owners

themselves experience and understand these emotional connections. While existing

studies have largely focused on the physiological and psychological benefits of pet

ownership, there is a lack of in-depth inquiry into the personal, lived experiences of

pet owners in forming and nurturing their bond with their pets.

This study aims to address this gap by investigating the ways in which pet

owners describe their emotional connection with their pets, the significance of pets

in their daily lives, and the perceived impact of pet ownership on their emotional

well-being. Additionally, by exploring the behaviors and actions that pet owners

believe are most important in fostering a strong bond, this research seeks to provide

a more comprehensive understanding of the factors that contribute to the emotional

bond between pets and their owners.

The findings of this study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the

role pets play in enhancing the quality of life for their owners, particularly in terms

of emotional support, companionship, and overall well-being. By focusing on the

subjective experiences of pet owners, this research will offer valuable insights into

how pets influence emotional health and the nature of the human-animal bond.

Research has shown that pets can provide crucial emotional support, helping

individuals cope with loneliness, anxiety, and depression (Maltby et al., 2005;

McConnell et al., 2011). However, studies examining the specific ways pet owners

perceive these benefits remain limited. For instance, while some studies suggest that

pet owners experience increased feelings of companionship and reduced emotional

distress (Siegel, 1990; Wells, 2009), the qualitative perspectives of owners

themselves regarding the formation and depth of their emotional bonds have not

been thoroughly explored. By addressing this gap, the proposed research will

contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of how pets influence the

emotional lives of their owners.

Furthermore, understanding the behaviors and actions that pet owners

believe are most important in strengthening the bond with their pets could have

practical implications for both pet care and mental health strategies. Such findings

could inform interventions aimed at enhancing the therapeutic benefits of pet

ownership, which have been increasingly recognized in various therapeutic settings

(Fine, 2019).

In conclusion, this study will provide valuable insights into the emotional

significance of the human-animal bond, offering a more comprehensive

understanding of how pets contribute to the emotional well-being of their owners.

2
The findings may also inform future research, pet care practices, and mental health

interventions, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for pet owners.

Review of Related Literature

Pet ownership is a widespread practice that has been extensively studied

across various disciplines, including psychology, sociology, and veterinary science.

Pets play a significant role in human lives, providing companionship, emotional

support, and social connections. While many studies have highlighted the positive

effects of pet ownership, such as reduced stress and improved mental health, others

have explored the responsibilities and challenges that come with caring for an

animal. This review examines existing literature on pet ownership, focusing on the

lived experiences of pet owners, the psychological and emotional benefits, the social

dynamics of human-animal relationships, and the difficulties associated with pet

care and loss.

The Psychological and Emotional Benefits of Pet Ownership Stress Reduction

and Emotional Support Multiple studies confirm that pet ownership is associated

with improved emotional well-being and stress reduction (Brooks et al., 2018;

McConnell et al., 2019; Purewal et al., 2017). The presence of pets has been linked to

lower cortisol levels, indicating reduced stress and increased relaxation (Wood et al.,

2015).

Brooks et al. (2018) conducted a qualitative study on individuals struggling

with mental health issues and found that pet ownership significantly alleviated

loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Participants described their pets as emotional

3
anchors that provide comfort during difficult tines. Similarly, Beetz et al. (2019)

Found that interacting with pets stimulates the release of oxytocin, a hormone

associated with social bonding and emotional stability. Their study confirmed that

pet owners, particularly those with therapy animals, reported increased happiness

and reduced stress levels.

Further supporting these findings, a study by Gee et al. (2021) examined the

impact of pet ownership on university students dealing with academic stress.

Results showed that students with pets exhibited lower levels of anxiety and higher

emotional resilience, suggesting that animals play a crucial role in helping young

adults manage stressful life transitions.

Pets as Companions for Emotional Well-being Numerous studies have

established the profound emotional connection between humans and their pets.

Research suggests that pets provide their owners with a sense of stability, emotional

security, and unconditional love, which can be particularly beneficial in times of

distress (Brooks et al., 2018; McConnell et al., 2019).

Brooks et al. (2018) conducted a qualitative study examining the experiences

of individuals with mental health challenges who owned pets. The study found that

pet owners frequently described their animals as sources of comfort and emotional

support. Many participants reported that their pets helped them manage symptoms

of anxiety and depression by providing companionship and reducing feelings of

loneliness.

4
Additionally, McConnell et al. (2019) found that pet ownership is linked to

higher levels of life satisfaction and happiness. Their research demonstrated that pet

owners often experience lower levels of stress and anxiety compared to non-pet

owners, largely due to the emotional support provided by their animals. Participants

in their study described their pets as "family members" who offered a consistent

source of affection and companionship. Moreover, research by Wood et al. (2015)

suggests that interactions with pets trigger the release of oxytocin, a hormone

associated with emotional bonding and relaxation. Their study found that

individuals who engaged in regular pet interactions reported lower cortisol levels,

indicating reduced stress and improved emotional well-being.

The Role of Pets in Mental Health Therapy Beyond providing day-to-day

companionship, pets have been integrated into therapeutic practices to support

individuals with psychological conditions. Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) has been

widely studied as an intervention for individuals struggling with trauma, anxiety,

and depression (Purewal et al., 2017).

According to a systematic review by Purewal et al. (2017), therapy animals

are used in clinical settings to help patients develop emotional regulation and coping

skills. The study highlighted that interactions with therapy animals improved mood,

reduced stress, and helped individuals feel more at ease in social situations. This

finding aligns with research by Rault et al. (2020), which found that therapy animals

significantly benefit individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by

offering comfort and promoting emotional healing.

5
Social Benefits of Pet Ownership

Pets as Social Catalysts Pets also play a vital role in enhancing social

interactions among individuals. Studies have found that pet owners are more likely

to engage in conversations with strangers and develop meaningful relationships

within their communities (Wood et al., 2017; Antonacopoulos & Pychyl, 2015).

Wood et al. (2017) explored how pet ownership contributes to social bonding

and found that dog owners, in particular, frequently interact with other pet owners

while walking their dogs. Many participants reported that their pets helped them

break social barriers and initiate conversations, leading to stronger connections

with neighbors and community members.

Similarly, Antonacopoulos and Pychyl (2015) examined the impact of pet

ownership on individuals' social lives and found that pet owners were more likely to

participate in group activities such as dog training classes, pet-friendly community

events, and online pet forums. Their research concluded that pets serve as social

facilitators, helping individuals build networks and reduce social isolation.

Intergenerational Bonding Through Pet Ownership Pets can also bridge generational

gaps and foster relationships between individuals of different age groups. Rault et al.

(2020) observed that children, adults, and elderly individuals often bond over

shared experiences related to pet care. Many grandparents, for instance, reported

that their pets provided opportunities to connect with their grandchildren through

activities such as feeding, playing, and walking their pets together.

6
In addition, pet ownership has been found to enhance empathy and social

responsibility in children. A study by McConnell et al. (2019) found that children

who grew up with pets demonstrated higher levels of emotional intelligence and

social competence compared to those without pets. The study suggested that pet

ownership teaches children responsibility, patience, and compassion, which are

essential skills for building positive relationships with others.

Challenges and Responsibilities of Pet Ownership

Financial and Time Commitments Despite the many benefits of pet

ownership, it also presents significant financial and time-related challenges. Irvine

and Cilia (2017) conducted a qualitative study exploring the financial burdens

associated with pet care. Their findings revealed that pet owners often struggle with

the costs of food, grooming, veterinary services, and emergency medical expenses.

Some participants expressed concerns about the increasing cost of pet healthcare,

particularly for animals with chronic illnesses or special needs.

In addition to financial challenges, pet ownership requires substantial time

commitment. Antonacopoulos and Pychyl (2015) found that pet owners often adjust

their daily routines to accommodate their pets' needs, including feeding, exercise,

and medical care. Many participants in their study described experiencing stress

when balancing work, personal responsibilities, and pet care.

Emotional Challenges: Coping with Pet Illness and Loss

The emotional impact of pet loss is another critical challenge associated with

pet ownership. Several studies have examined the grief and mourning process that

7
pet owners experience after losing a beloved animal (Rault et al., 2020; Brooks et al.,

2018).

According to Rault et al. (2020), pet owners often experience profound grief

after their pets pass away, with some describing the loss as equivalent to losing a

human family member. The study found that pet owners who had to make end-of-

life decisions for their pets, such as euthanasia, often struggled with feelings of guilt

and sadness.

Pet loss is one of the most emotionally distressing experiences for pet

owners. Several studies have examined the grieving process associated with pet

death (Rault et al., 2020; Brooks et al., 2018).

A study by Stewart et al. (2021) found that individuals who lost a pet

reported symptoms of grief similar to those experienced after the death of a close

family member. Many participants described feelings of deep sadness, guilt, and

emotional emptiness. Furthermore, research by Adams et al. (2020) highlighted the

need for greater recognition of pet loss grief in psychological support services, as

many individuals struggle with mourning their pets in a society that often dismisses

such grief.

Brooks et al. (2018) also examined coping strategies among grieving pet

owners. Their study found that online pet loss support groups played a crucial role

in helping individuals process their grief, providing a sense of community and

shared understanding.

8
Cultural Perspectives on Pet Ownership Pet ownership experiences differ

across cultures due to varying societal attitudes and beliefs about animals. Research

by Irvine and Cilia (2017) found that Western cultures generally view pets as family

members, leading to strong emotional attachments and high levels of investment in

pet care. In contrast, some cultures view animals primarily as functional beings,

such as livestock or working animals, which affects the nature of human-animal

relationships.

Rault et al. (2020) examined cultural differences in pet ownership and found

that in some Asian countries, pet ownership is on the rise due to changing urban

lifestyles and increasing awareness of animal welfare. However, attitudes toward

pets vary significantly, with some individuals seeing them as status symbols rather

than emotional companions.

Existing literature on pet ownership highlights its significant emotional,

psychological, and social benefits. Pets provide companionship, reduce stress, and

enhance social interactions. However, pet ownership also presents challenges,

including financial responsibilities, emotional distress related to pet loss, and the

time commitment required for pet care. Cultural perspectives further shape how

individuals experience and perceive pet ownership.

10
THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem:

This study sought to explore the lived experiences of pet owners, particularly

in relation to the emotional support provided by their pets, the impact on their daily

routines, and the challenges they encountered. This study intended to answer the

following questions:

1. What behaviors or actions do pet owners believe are most important in

fostering a strong bond with their pets?

2. How do pet owners describe the emotional connection they share with their

pets?

3. How do pet owners perceive the impact of their pets on their emotional well-

being and daily lives?

4. How do pet owners describe the significance of their pets in their lives,

especially in terms of emotional support and companionship?

Significance of the study

This study is valuable to different groups, offering insights that are applicable to:

For Pet Owners – It highlights the positive effects of having pets on physical,

emotional, and mental well-being. Pets can help reduce stress, provide

companionship, and encourage an active lifestyle. By recognizing these benefits, pet

11
owners can be more mindful of responsible pet care and its impact on their overall

quality of life.

For the Community – Pet ownership contributes to building stronger, more

connected communities by fostering social interactions and promoting empathy.

This study explores how pets help bring people together, encourage kindness, and

support a more inclusive society. Additionally, it can help promote pet-friendly

policies, spaces, and programs that benefit both pet owners and the general public.

Scope and Delimitations

This study explored pet ownership, specifically its impact on the emotional

well-being, physical health, and social interactions of individuals who owned pets. It

examined various types of pets, such as dogs, cats, fish, and small mammals, and

how they influenced their owners’ daily lives. The research was limited to pet

owners aged 18 and above residing in Cubacub, Mandaue City, ensuring a more

targeted sample. It did not include exotic or farm animals and did not extensively

cover the financial or legal aspects of pet ownership. The study aimed to provide a

clear understanding of the advantages and challenges of pet ownership while

recognizing its limitations.

Definition of Terms

Pet Ownership: The responsibility of caring for and maintaining a domestic animal,

including providing for its physical, emotional, and health needs.

12
Companionship: The emotional bond and sense of friendship or support that pets

provide to their owners, often contributing to a sense of well-being and happiness.

Responsible Pet Care: The commitment to meeting all the needs of a pet, including

proper nutrition, regular exercise, grooming, healthcare, and emotional attention.

Pet owner: Willingness of the owner to care the pets and not by force.

Research Methodology

This chapter discusses the research design, research environment, research

participants, research instruments, research procedure used in this study.

Research Design

This study was qualitative in nature. The researchers used a

phenomenological method in order to explore the experiences and bonds as a pet

owner. Phenomenology was a qualitative research approach that placed a significant

emphasis on exploring and understanding human experiences. This methodology

invited researchers to delve deeply into the ways individuals perceived and made

sense of their own lived experiences, as well as how they interpreted and shared

those experiences with others (Giles, 2023).

Research Environment

14
Figure 2: The research was conducted at Purok 1, Cubacub, Mandaue City and Purok

7, Kawayanan, Mandaue City

Research Participants

There were 10 participants who were selected purposively in different places

in Cubacub, Mandaue City. Two participants of the study were located in Cubacub

Purok 1, Mandaue City, and the other eight participants were pet owners in

Kawayanan Purok 7, Mandaue City. All participants were required to be current pet

owners with at least six months of experience in caring for their pets because they

had more experience of having a pet and could provide more information about

their experience of being a pet owner.

Data Gathering and Research Procedure

A phenomenological method was adopted in this study in order to access and

understand the experiences and connections that existed between pet owners and

their pets. Phenomenology focused on how people interpreted and constructed

meaning out of their experiences. To obtain significant information, in-depth

interviews were used as the main source of data collection, whereby participants

narrated their stories as they pertained to pet ownership.

The participants of this study were selected purposively, ensuring that they

met the necessary criteria for providing relevant experiences. A total of 10 pet

owners from Cubacub, Mandaue City took part in the study, with two participants

15
from Purok 1 and eight participants from Kawayanan, Purok 7. All participants were

required to be current pet owners with at least six months of experience in caring

for their pets.

Before proceeding with the interviews, the researchers obtained informed

consent, ensuring that participants fully understood the purpose of the study, their

voluntary participation, and their right to withdraw at any time. To facilitate the

interviews, the researchers developed a semi-structured interview guide based on

key themes relevant to the study. This guide included open-ended questions that

explored participants’ emotional connections with their pets, daily routines and

interactions, challenges in pet ownership, and the overall impact of having pets on

their lives.

The interviews were conducted in a comfortable and natural setting, such as

the participants’ homes, to encourage an open and authentic discussion. Each

session lasted approximately 15–20 minutes and was audio-recorded (with consent)

to ensure accuracy in data collection. After data collection, the interviews were

transcribed verbatim to preserve the authenticity of participants’ narratives.

The researchers carefully examined the transcripts through a thematic

analysis approach. This process involved familiarization with the data, identifying

16
significant statements, clustering themes, and interpreting the deeper meanings

behind participants’ experiences. Key themes were extracted to represent the

essence of pet ownership and its influence on human emotions and well-being. The

findings were validated and authenticated for trustworthiness and credibility

through member checking. This meant that the participants were provided with the

opportunity to review and validate the interpretations drawn from their responses.

Research Instrument

The interview guide comprised open-ended questions meant to encourage

the participants to provide their thoughts and experiences in depth. The guide

ensured that while all participants were asked similar questions, they had the

freedom to elaborate on their unique experiences. This flexibility allowed the

researchers to gain deeper insights into the essence of the human-animal bond.

To keep the data valid and reliable, all interviews were recorded via audio (if

the participants agreed), and their answers were transcribed verbatim for

comprehensive analysis. The researchers also took field notes for important non-

verbal responses, emotions, and observations that made the interpretation of the

participants more significant.

17
Chapter 3

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND

INTERPRETATION DATA

This chapter presents the in-depth interviews conducted with the

participants. A broad description and presentation of significant themes are

presented entirely to depict the views of pet owners’ experiences and challenges in

pet ownership.

A prominent theme from the data is the emotional comfort provided by pets.

Participants shared that their pets offer companionship and a sense of emotional

stability, particularly during stressful or lonely moments. For example, Participant 2

mentioned, “He doesn’t make me feel lonely and is the reason why I didn’t

experience depression.” Similarly, Participant 6 noted that their pet helps relieve

school-related stress.

The results implies that pets provide emotional support to their owners by

helping them feel less lonely and stressed. Participants shared that their pets make

them feel better and even prevent feelings of sadness or depression. Pets offer

companionship and comfort, which helps improve their owners' mood and overall

well-being. Which means that having a pet can be beneficial for mental health, as

they provide constant support and help reduce stress.

19
Research supports the idea that pets contribute to emotional well-being.

According to McConnell et al. (2011), pet ownership enhances psychological health

by reducing stress and increasing feelings of social support. Another study by Beetz

et al. (2012) found that interacting with pets triggers the release of oxytocin, a

hormone associated with bonding and stress relief.

Many participants described their pets as family members, with some even

referring to them as siblings or children. Participant 5 stated, “My pet is not just a

pet; they are family.” This deep emotional connection suggests that pets play an

integral role in the owners’ lives, providing unconditional love and support.

The result implies that Pets provide unconditional love, support and comfort

where the deep emotional connection between pet owners and their pets highlights

the need for compassionate and supportive veterinary care.

Bowlby’s (1969) attachment theory explains that individuals form strong

emotional bonds with figures that provide security and comfort, which extends to

human-pet relationships. Kurdek (2008) found that for many people, pets serve as

attachment figures, offering companionship and emotional stability similar to

human relationships.

Participants noted that their pets influence their daily activities, including

feeding schedules, exercise routines, and general household responsibilities.

Participant 8 shared, “Before going to school, I make sure my pet has food and

water.” Others mentioned that pets encourage them to engage in physical activities

such as morning walks.

The results implies that having pets helps people be more responsible and

active. Participants follow a daily routine to take care of their pets, like feeding them

and going on walks, which also helps them manage their time better.

O’Haire (2017) argues that pet ownership fosters discipline and routine, as

daily responsibilities related to pet care structure an owner’s schedule. Similarly,

Serpell (1991) found that dog owners, in particular, engage in more physical activity

than non-owners due to the need for regular walks and outdoor interactions.

Despite the benefits, pet ownership comes with challenges. Participants cited

time constraints, financial difficulties, and behavioral issues as significant concerns.

Participant 9 stated, “It’s hard when my pet gets sick because of financial

difficulties.” Others expressed that balancing their busy schedules with pet care is

difficult.

The results implies that pet ownership presents various challenges,

particularly in terms of time management, financial struggles, and health-related

concerns. The statements indicate that owners find it difficult to allocate sufficient

time for their pets due to their absence from home. Additionally, financial

constraints significantly impact their ability to care for pets, especially when medical

needs arise. These findings highlight the necessity of responsible pet ownership,

considering both the emotional and financial responsibilities involved.

Walsh (2009) notes that while pets offer emotional and psychological

benefits, they also require time, financial commitment, and responsibility. A study by

23
Serpell (2019) highlights that pet-related expenses and the need for daily care can

sometimes create stress for owners, particularly those with demanding lifestyles.

Chapter 4

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, findings, conclusion, and recommendations of

the study.

Summary

This study seeks to explore the lived experiences of pet owners, particularly

in relation to the emotional support provided by their pets, the impact on their daily

routines, and the challenges they encounter. This study intends to answer the

following questions:

24

Findings

Based from the analyses and interpretation of the data, the following findings

were drawn. The study found that pet ownership provides significant emotional and

psychological benefits, with five participants stating that their pets help reduce

loneliness, stress, and even prevent depression. Four participants mentioned that

their pets provide comfort during difficult times, acting as emotional support

companions. Pets also encourage responsibility and routine, as six participants said

that caring for their pets made them more disciplined, while three participants

noted that feeding and walking their pets became part of their daily schedules,

helping them develop better time management. However, despite these benefits, pet

ownership also comes with challenges. Four participants struggled with balancing

their time, three participants faced financial difficulties, and two participants found

it challenging to manage their pets’ behavior and health.

25
1. Many participants expressed that their pets offer emotional support, helping

them cope with feelings of loneliness and stress. Some even shared that their

pets prevent them from experiencing depression, highlighting the strong

emotional bond between pet owners and their animals.

2. Participants described how caring for their pets taught them responsibility

and discipline. They explained that daily tasks such as feeding, walking, and

ensuring their pets’ well-being became part of their routines, helping them

develop better time management skills.

3. Several participants shared the difficulties of balancing their personal

responsibilities with pet care. Some found it challenging to dedicate enough

time to their pets due to school or work commitments, while others struggled

with the financial demands of pet ownership, particularly in providing food

and medical care.

4. While many participants spoke about the joy and companionship their pets

bring, they also acknowledged the responsibilities involved. Some

emphasized that owning a pet requires long-term commitment, patience, and

financial preparedness, suggesting that pet ownership should be carefully

considered before making the decision to adopt an animal.

Conclusion

Based on the findings, it can be concluded that pet ownership offers

significant emotional and psychological benefits, particularly in reducing stress,

loneliness, and the risk of depression. The emotional support provided by pets

26
strengthens the bond between animals and their owners, contributing positively to

mental well-being. Additionally, caring for pets promotes responsibility, discipline,

and time management as owners incorporate pet care into their daily routines.

However, the study also reveals that pet ownership comes with challenges, such as

time constraints, financial burdens, and difficulties in managing pet behavior and

health. Therefore, while pet ownership can be highly rewarding, it requires careful

consideration, long-term commitment, and preparedness to ensure both the pet’s

and the owner’s well-being.

Recommendation

Based on the findings and conclusion, these recommendations are strongly

suggested:

1. Prospective pet owners should attend educational programs highlighting pet

care responsibilities, including time, finances, and health needs.

2. Current and potential pet owners should budget for both initial adoption

costs and ongoing expenses.

3. Inform potential pet owners about the emotional benefits of pet ownership

alongside its responsibilities.
