Situation analysis, Engagement, Analytical-thinking and Problem-solving

3. Learning Objectives

1. Understand the concept of data normalization.

2. Identify common types of data anomalies and explain how normalization helps eliminate them.
3. Apply normalization techniques to a given dataset.

4. Learning Context
A. The Learners (Prior Knowledge)
(i) Data, Database, database terminologies, importance of database

(ii) Differentiated Approach:

1. Spatial/Visual learners: Use videos to explain data normalization.

2. Aural learners: Use a combination of lectures, discussions, and audio clips to explain data normalization.
3. Kin-esthetic learners: Provide hands-on activities, practical exercises to explore application of data normalization.

B. Resources/Materials

- Worksheet with a sample dataset

- Microsoft Access (DB Package)

5. Teaching/Learning Strategies

INTRODUCTION (5 Minutes)

Use a KWL chart to assess students' prior knowledge and interests in data normalization:
1. Greet the students and briefly explain the purpose of the lesson.
2. Actively engage the students by asking if they have heard about data normalization and what they understand by
the term, encourage class discussion, asking questions such as; what are data? What is normalization and Why
normalization?
3. Provide a real-life example to illustrate the importance of data organization and integrity, such as a customer
database or student records.

Lesson Plan
MAIN LESSON (12 MINUTES):

1. Definition and Importance of Data Normalization (5 minutes):

- Write the definition of data normalization on the board: "Data normalization is a process of organizing data in a
database to eliminate redundancy and improve data integrity."

- Discuss the importance of data normalization, such as reducing data duplication, improving data consistency,
and minimizing update anomalies.

- Emphasize the benefits of data normalization in terms of data integrity and efficient database management.

2. Normalization Techniques (5 minutes):

- Introduce the concept of normalization techniques, specifically focusing on the first three normal forms (1NF,
2NF, and 3NF).

o Explain each normal form briefly:

 First Normal Form (1NF): Ensures that each attribute in a table contains only atomic values.
 Second Normal Form (2NF): Eliminates partial dependencies by separating attributes into different tables.
 Third Normal Form (3NF): Eliminates transitive dependencies by creating separate tables for related data.

o Use examples and visual aids to illustrate the normalization process for the given dataset.
o Discuss the benefits of each normalization form.

3. Practice Activity (2 minutes):

- Distribute worksheet containing a sample dataset to each student.
- Instruct the students to identify any data normalization issues within the dataset and write down the steps they
would take to normalize it.
- Encourage students to work individually or in group.

Assessment (5 minutes):

1. Ask students to share their normalization steps with the class.

2. Evaluate their understanding by asking follow-up questions about the normalization process and the benefits of
data normalization.
3. Provide constructive feedback to the students and address any misconceptions.

Conclusion (1 minute):
1. Recap the main points covered during the lesson, highlighting the definition, importance, and techniques of data
normalization.
2. Emphasize the role of data normalization in maintaining data integrity and efficient database management.

Application (moving from guided and gradual release of responsibility):

Give the students a sample dataset of a coffee shop to apply the first three normal form (1NF, 2NF and 3NF)
techniques.
