● Third conditional clause (Mệnh đề If loại 3): Câu điều kiện loại 3 được sử
dụng để diễn tả một hành động, sự việc đã không xảy ra trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ:
If she had studied harder, she would have passed the exam.(Nếu cô ấy
học chăm hơn, cô ấy đã đỗ kỳ thi rồi.)
Trong thực tế, cô ấy không học chăm, nên cô ấy không đỗ.
Cấu trúc mệnh đề If loại 3:
If + S + had + V3/ed, S + would/could/might + have + V3/ed
Ví dụ:
If he had left earlier, he would have caught the train. (Nếu anh ấy rời đi
sớm hơn, anh ấy đã bắt kịp chuyến tàu.)
If they had invited me, I would have attended the party. (Nếu họ mời tôi,
tôi đã tham dự bữa tiệc.)

● Second conditional clause (Mệnh đề If loại 2)
Cách dùng: Mệnh đề If loại 2 diễn tả một điều kiện không có thật ở hiện tại
hoặc tương lai, tức là giả định một tình huống trái với thực tế hiện tại.
Cấu trúc mệnh đề If loại 2:
If + S + V2/ed, S + would + V (nguyên mẫu)
● Mệnh đề If sử dụng quá khứ đơn.
● Mệnh đề chính dùng would/could/might + động từ nguyên mẫu.
Lưu ý
● Với động từ "to be", ta dùng "were" cho tất cả các chủ ngữ (không dùng "was").
Ví dụ
Câu khẳng định:
● If I had a car, I would drive to work.
(Nếu tôi có ô tô, tôi sẽ lái xe đi làm – nhưng thực tế là tôi không có xe).
● If she were here, she could help us.
(Nếu cô ấy ở đây, cô ấy có thể giúp chúng ta – nhưng thực tế cô ấy không ở
đây).
Câu phủ định:
● If he didn’t smoke, he would be healthier.
(Nếu anh ấy không hút thuốc, anh ấy sẽ khỏe mạnh hơn – nhưng thực tế là anh
ấy hút thuốc).
Câu nghi vấn:
● What would you do if you won the lottery?
(Bạn sẽ làm gì nếu bạn trúng xổ số? – nhưng thực tế bạn chưa trúng).
