Med School Bootcamp Step 1 Study Schedule
Some students have started to study lightly for Step 1 in an effort to place more emphasis
on Step 2. However, taking Step 1 seriously will help you build a strong foundation and
set you up for greater success on Step 2.
My name is Dr. Roviso, and I’m here to help you prepare for and absolutely crush Step
1. I understand the challenges that come with preparing for the USMLE Step 1 after going
through it myself. I’ve put together this study schedule along with some of my best tips
and tricks for preparing for the exam. Together, we will focus on simplifying the complex,
drowning out the noise, mastering the highest-yield concepts, and building up your
confidence every day. Remember, success will come from working hard and working
efficiently, and I'm here to support you every step of the way.
Let’s do this!
Bootcamp.com 1
Med School Bootcamp Step 1 Study Schedule
Each day is divided into a morning and afternoon, both of which contain four study slots
of approximately 70 minutes each. The study slots include video lessons, flashcard-style
recall quizzes (called “Bites”), and board-style practice questions.
The Bites questions follow each video and are labeled as a post-video quiz. These questions
should be completed during the dedicated video block. After completing each question,
you may tag it as Learning, Reviewing, or Mastered, which allows you to return later and
review questions you haven’t mastered yet.
"Bites Review" study slot times should be used to review previously tagged Bites questions.
I recommend using the "Create Test" feature to select "Bites" and filter your test to specific
topics or tagged items. Begin with targeting the “Learning” tags and eventually move on to
the “Reviewing” tags.
Bootcamp.com 2
Med School Bootcamp Step 1 Study Schedule
You can also access your tagged questions by scrolling to the “Tagged Questions” link on
the left sidebar of your main study page:
When all of the Bites questions are tagged as Mastered, I recommend continuing to
consistently create and complete Bites tests during dedicated Bites Review slots on the
study schedule to reinforce learning and maintain mastery.
I also recommend taking a look at my “How it Works” video for a more in-depth tour of the
Med School Bootcamp platform.

If you would like to discuss any topics such as the schedule, curriculum planning, or how to
manage your stress, feel free to contact us. We are here to support you in any way we can,
so reach out anytime!
This study group is an extremely valuable resource while you study for Step 1. I
recommend joining for two reasons:
First, if you ever have a question on a concept, practice problem, or something about Step
1, it’s very likely that someone there will help you out.
Second, you can help out other people with their questions. People tend to remember
10% of what they read but 90% of what they teach. Even if you don’t know the answer
to someone’s question, look it up and explain it to them. You’ll learn something new, it’ll
stick with you for a long time, and you will have helped someone else.

Self Care
Although nine weeks of ongoing studying can seem exhausting, the time will fly by before
you know it!
Your stamina should improve as you reach the later weeks; however, it is possible that you
become fatigued. To avoid burning out, I recommend that you stay mindful and maintain
your personal wellness.
During stressful and demanding times, it’s easy to sacrifice your mental and physical health
for the exam. I would caution against this. The importance of making time to focus on
yourself cannot be understated.
For some, this might mean a gym session or run before their first study block. For others, it
can mean spending quality time with those closest to them. I recommend creating a list of
five things you would like to do each week and making space for them in your schedule.
Weeks 1-2
During the first two study weeks, we will primarily target content learning. Each unit
gradually adds layers of difficulty to previously discussed material. Rather than learning the
material from each study unit (e.g., hematology, cardiology, pulmonology) one at a time,
material from the study units is interwoven throughout each study day. I believe this
method is more effective, as the real exam incorporates all units randomly throughout
each block of questions.
This period also involves a greater focus on active recall. I recommend completing the
Bites questions for each chapter after watching the videos and tagging unfamiliar material
for review during your Bites review blocks.
You can also supplement this time with an Anki deck. I would encourage you to focus the
Anki cards on material learned previously in the unit videos for more effective active recall.
Bootcamp.com 6
Med School Bootcamp Step 1 Study Schedule
Weeks 3-5
Weeks 3-5 are a transition period during which you will continue to solidify previously
learned concepts and work on mastering new content.
During this period, board-style questions are integrated into the study blocks. Reviewing
40 explanations in 70 minutes is not an easy task: it requires each explanation to be
reviewed in less than two minutes. I recommend being 100% engaged during the board
question review blocks so you don’t greatly exceed the time needed to complete them.
Some students will spend an entire day reviewing 40 questions; while that may work for
some, your goal should be to maximize effectiveness and efficiency simultaneously
(this is typical in medicine!). You can experiment to determine what works best for you.
Weeks 6-8
Many runners will tell you that the second to last lap is often the most difficult. This can
certainly be the case in your Step 1 study period as well.
During weeks 6-8, stress levels begin to reach new heights and doubt can try to sneak its
way into your mind. This period is probably one of the most challenging, so mentally
prepare yourself for these weeks in advance.
Board-style questions will take up the majority of your study time, with a bit of time
set aside for Bites/Anki review. We also start to integrate NBME exams on day 6 of each
week. These are important to building your test-taking stamina and can help you gauge
where you currently stand.

Week 9
This is it! Everything you prepared for is yours for the taking. Easier said than done – I know,
I’ve been there.
The most important thing you can do this week is keep everything in perspective. It can
be easy to discount all the effort you put in to get to this point – don’t do this! You’ve put in
the work and can be confident in your preparation. Give this last week all you have left
in the tank.
I recommend that you spend day five of this week reviewing your tagged recall
questions, Anki decks, and board-style questions rather than watching video lessons.
You want all those quick recall facts to be at your fingertips for test day.
At the end of day five, I recommend that you go into a full 24-hour rest day. This includes
not opening up your computer even to “just look something up real quick.” Trust your
preparation, disconnect from studying, and give your brain a chance to refresh and relax
for the following day. Try to get a full night of sleep the night before the test. It might also
be a good idea to prepare food for your breakfast/locker during the exam. And remember,
by no means is your future as a physician defined by any single written exam.
I am cheering for you! Let us know how Step 1 goes on our After Step 1 page. Trust the
process, you’ve got this!
