Takeoff
Check you have received takeoff clearance. When ready, turn on all the landing lights.
Advance the throttles to about 1.10 EPR. Apply forward pressure on the yoke until 1.10 EPR.
Check all four engines are stabilized:
o Engage the autothrottle.
o Check EPR displays on the annunciator panel.
o At 80 knots, check THRESHLD is displayed on the annunciator and takeoff power is
set.
o At VR, slowly bring back the control column to avoid a tail strike. Aim to rotate over
a space of about 8 seconds.
o When at a positive rate of at least +500 FPM and with the altimeter rising, raise the
gear. Maintain pitch to hold a speed of V2 + 10. If you are too light to maintain V2 +
10, maintain whatever speed you can closest to that value. If lower then V2 + 10,
make sure you pitch to accelerate to V2 + 10 .
o Autopilot can be engaged at a minimum of 1200 feet AGL.
Max AP pitch =8 degr for IAS mode, 15 degr for VS mode
When ready to start cleaning up:
o If you desire to clean up straight away, lower the nose either with the control column
(if flying manually) or the V/S wheel (if flying with autopilot). Otherwise, use IAS
hold to maintain V2 + 10 until ready:
o Lower the nose to maintain about +500 fpm climb depending TOW.
o If using flaps 20 for takeoff, set flaps 10.
o Upon passing flaps 5 speed, set flaps 5. When flaps are at 5, set CLB on the
EPR computer. The throttles will retard to climb thrust. Retract flaps
according to the flap schedule. If using a noise-abatement procedure, at flaps 5
speed engage IAS mode until ready to clean-up the rest of the aircraft.
o Open the pack valves one by one, without about 15 seconds in-between.
o When flaps are up, set the gear handle to OFF.
o Turn off the turnoff lights.
o Turn off engine ignition on the overhead.
o Select the fuel heat to AUTO.
o Navigate as required.
o When reaching 250 knots (below 10,000 feet), engage V/S mode on the autopilot. Set
the climb speed (250 knots below 10,000, optimum speed above) on the MCP.
Engage EPR mode on the FFRATS panel. Set the desired V/S.
Call the AFTER TAKEOFF checklist:
o Passing through 10,000 feet:
o Check the pressurization panel.
o Turn off the seatbelt signs if not needed. Turn off the landing lights.
o Engage V/S mode and pitch down to accelerate through 250 knots. Pitch up
when reaching the optimal climb speed.
o When passing through the local transition altitude, set altimeters to standard
(1013/29.92).
Approaching cruising altitude
When the aircraft is about 1,000 feet below the target altitude, the aircraft will automatically
reduce pitch in order to level off. When at the desired mach speed, engage MACH on the
FFRATS and set the EPRL computer to CRZ. The aircraft will maintain the approximate
mach speed. You can also set the ATS bug on the IAS corresponding the required MACH
and slect SPEED on the FFRATS
During Cruise
After levelling off at cruising altitude, turn on the supplementary vent fan and recirculation
fans 2, 3 and 4 and configure the packs based on the appropriate config. Refer to the Air
Conditioning Procedures manual for more information:
With 0-170 passengers:
o Set Pack 1 to ½ and Pack 3 to ½.
o Turn off Pack 2.
o Select the Pack 2 control switch.
o Set the Pack 2 control to MAN. Hold the manual heat/cool switch to HEAT
until the inlet door reaches full heat position. This will reduce drag and
enhance fuel conservation. During taxi-in, place the pack control switch to
AUTO. Check that the inlet door moves to cool.
o During taxi-in, open pack 2. Place the pack control switch to AUTO. Check
that the inlet door moves to cool. Open all 3 packs.
With 171-260 passengers:
o Set all 3 packs to ½. Do this one-at-a-time and allow the cabin pressure to
stabilize in between.
With 261-300 passengers:
o Set Pack 1 to ½ and Pack 3 to ½. Leave Pack 2 fully open.
With 301-388 passengers:
o Leave Pack 1 and Pack 3 in full and set Pack 2 to ½.
Step Climbs
If your flight is long enough, step climb when able to increase fuel conservation. When step
climbing, use EPR and CLB mode on the EPRL computer. Set the desired altitude, arm ALT
SEL and use MACH HOLD to climb. When levelling off, re-engage MACH and CRZ mode
on the EPRL.
See the following tables for optimal altitudes:
In Pounds
In Kilograms
Fuel Management
If using fuel from the centre or balancing the main tanks, make sure ALL
CROSSFEEDS are open before turning off any boost pumps.
Keep a track of your fuel burn using the flight plan.
If fuel is in the centre tank, that fuel will burn first. When the Override/Jettison PRESS lights
illuminate:
Turn off the Override/Jettison Pumps.
Turn on the Scavange Pump. When the Scavange PRESS light illuminates, turn it off.
Make sure all 4 crossfeeds are open then turn off No. 1 and No. 4 boost pumps. When
the quantity in No. 2 and No. 3 tanks matches the quantity in No. 1 and No. 4, see
below:
If no fuel in the centre but quantity in No. 2 and No. 3 tanks is greater than No. 1 and No. 4:
Open all crossfeed valves and turn off No. 1 and No. 4 boost pumps.
When the fuel quantity in No. 2and No. 3 tanks equals the quantity in No. 1 + No. 1 Reserve
and No. 4 + No. 4 Reserve:
Turn on the No. 1 and No. 4 boost pumps.
Close crossfeed valves 2, 3 and 4.
During the final stages of cruise flight, use the reserve tanks to feed fuel to the outer tanks:
When the No.1 and No. 4 tanks are at 2300kg/5070lbs, or at top of descent
(whichever comes first), open the No. 1 and No. 4 reserve valves.
If the difference between No. 2 and No. 3 main tanks differs in more than 500kg/1100lbs,
balance them out by turning off the boost pumps off the tank with the lower quantity and
open 1 override/jettison pump. When the fuel is balanced, turn back on the boost pumps and
turn off the override/jettison pump.
Descent and Approach
Pilots
To calculate your top of descent, use a simple formula.
Triple the amount of altitude you need to lose, then take away the three zeros. That is
the ideal distance to start your descent. Say you’re at 34,000 feet and you first need to
get down to 20,000 feet – that’s 14,000 feet you have to lose. Times that by three and
that equals 42,000. So 42nm before when you need to be at 20,000 feet.
Check your groundspeed on the HSI, multiply it by five and that’s the ideal FPM for
descent.
Remember – the initial descent altitude should not be the field elevation. Use either
altitude restrictions on the arrival or the altitude you need to be at by the IAF.
Prepare for your arrival. Check any approach plates, dial in the appropriate navigation radio
frequencies and calculate your approach speeds. Set autobrake to the desired setting.
Set the radio altimeters to the approach minima.
Turn on anti-ice if required when the temperature is +10C TAT and below with visible
moisture. Only use wing-anti ice if the flaps are retracted. Place flight start ignition on before
selecting anti-ice. Maintain at least 50% N1 descending through icing conditions.
Set the altimeters to the field QNH when passing through transition level.
If using INS, make sure to set the RADIO/INS switches back to RADIO.
Engineer
Set the cabin altitude and pressurization altimeter to the field QNH.
When ready to start descent:
Using IAS Mode:
o Set SPEED on the EPR computer.
o Dial in the target altitude and arm ALT SEL.
o Disconnect the autothrottle and retard the thrust levers to idle. The autothrottle
will always disengage if you use IAS or MACH hold in any setting other then
EPR.
o Engage IAS mode. The autopilot will adjust to main the current airspeed
during descent.
o If you need to level off before reaching 10,000 feet, advance the thrust levers,
arm SPEED on the EPR computer and engage the autothrottle to maintain the
desired altitude.
o Approaching 10,000 feet, advance the thrust levers to slow the rate of descent
and start decelerating to 250 knots. At 250 knots, engage IAS mode again.
o When reaching the approach altitude, engage SPEED on the EPR computer
and set the autothrottle to maintain the desired speed.
When using V/S mode:
o Dial in the target altitude and arm ALT SEL.
o Arm SPEED on the EPR computer. Set the desired descent speed on the MCP.
o Engage V/S mode. Adjust the wheel as needed.
o Approaching 10,000 feet, set the MCP speed to 250 knots and adjust the V/S
in order to decelerate.
Passing through 10,000 feet
o Turn on the SEATBELT and NO SMOKING signs if not already on.
o Turn on the landing lights.
o Set the WX Radar to 4-6 degrees of tilt.
o Check the Captain’s FLT DTR CMPTR is set to A and the First Officer’s to B.

o When approaching the traffic pattern, slow to flaps 5 speed. Check the leading-edge
lights are green and the flap indicators agree.
o On downwind, select flaps 10 speed and deploy flaps 10.
o Upon established on the glidepath, slow down to flaps 20 speed and lower the landing
gear.
o The aircraft should be fully configured for landing and the approach stable by 1,000
feet AGL:
o Speed brakes armed.
o Flaps 25/30.
o Gear down and locked, green light.
o Go-around altitude set on the MCP.
Call the LANDING checklist:
Go-Around
If a go around is necessary:
o Apply maximum thrust and pitch up.
o Engage EPR on the pedestal. The throttles will advance to TO/GA power.
o Select flaps 10.
o When at a positive rate of +500 FPM, retract the landing gear.
o When ready to clean up, lower the nose. Passing through flaps 5 speed, retract to flaps
5. When flaps are at 5, engage CLB on the EPRL computer, then accelerate to 250
knots.
Rollout
o Check that the speed brakes deploy.
o Engage reverse thrust. Check the REV OPERATING and FULL REV lights
illuminate.
o At 60 knots, stow the reversers and apply manual braking. The autobrake will move to
DISARM. When ready to vacate the runway, arm body gear steering.
Taxiing In
Pilot
o Check brake pressure is in the green.
o Turn off the autobrake.
o Turn off the engine ignition.
o Set the WX radar and transponder to STBY.
o Turn off the strobe and landing lights.
o Retract and disarm the flaps.
o Retract the spoilers.
o Set the stabilizer trim to 7 units.
Engineer
o Open the outflow valves.
o If valves do not automatically open, place mode selector to MAN and open
both valves.
o Turn the pressurization mode selector to MAN.
o Turn off the Aft Cargo Heat.
o Delay APU start until approaching the ramp. Do not establish APU power until
parked at the ramp.
Call the AFTER LANDING checklist;
Parking
The engines should be operated at or near-idle for five minutes between landing and parking
if full reverse was used, or otherwise at three minutes.
Change over to APU Electrical Power and Shutdown
o Check APU GEN 1 and APU GEN 2 voltage and frequency on the AC Meters.
o Establish APU power.
o Check that APU GEN OPEN lights extinguish and engine GEN OPEN lights
illuminate.
o Open the APU bleed air.
o Close engine bleed valves 1, 2, 3 and 4. Check HIGH STAGE lights
extinguish.
o Turn off ADPs 1, 2 ,3 and 4.
o Shut down engines 1, 2, 3 and 4.
o Turn off all fuel boost pumps
o Turn on No. 4 electric hydraulic pump if needed.
Pilots
Turn off the beacon.
Ensure the parking brake is properly engaged. If the brake is on but no PARK BRAKE or
ANTI SKID HYD light is illuminated, disengage the brake, apply pressure to the toe brakes
than re-engage. To cool down the brakes, call the wheel chocks using the EFB ground menu.
Once they are in place, disengage the parking brake.
Turn off the probe and window heat.
Refer to the INS manual for proper INS procedures when parking.
Engineer
Leave packs 1 and 3 or 2 and 3 on if needed for passenger comfort. If APU is not operating
and ground air not available, turn off pack valves.
Check all fuel boost pumps are off and reserve valves closed.
Leave hydraulic EDPs in normal and ADPs in off.
Check crew and passenger oxygen levels are above normal.
Flight Termination
Pilots
Turn off the emergency lights.
Turn off the WX radar.
Turn off the radio master switches.
Engineer
Leave electrical power on all busses and the battery switch on. If necessary to shut down
electrical power:
o Close APU bleed valve and any packs still on.
o Place the APU master switch to STOP.
o When the APU inlet door closes, place the battery switch to OFF.
Turn off the navigation light and any unnecessary cockpit lights.
