“Jeepney Phaseout”

Jeeps or Jeepney was the most used transportation in the Philippines even during 19s, and
was known as the “King of the Road”. Therefore, Filipino were worried towards issue about
jeepneys being phased out, as the officials wants to change the traditional jeepney into
modern jeepney that is way more expensive than the traditional one.
If the traditional jeepney was replaced by the expensive modernized jeepney the fare will
also spike. Therefore, not only the jeepney drivers are affected in this issue, it will also affect
normal commuter for paying a lot more than the traditional jeeps. Jeepney drivers was of
course opposed to phasing out the jeepney.
As we all know, Philippines was a third world country, the minimum wage was sometimes
not enough for daily expenses. Jeepney driver’s earning from their pamamasada was only
enough to feed their family and for other necessity. Philippine jeepney drivers and operators
staged a protest over the government's plan to phase out the traditional jeepney nationwide
and replace them with modern mini-buses.
According to Rutaquio from LTFRB, LTFRB wants to modernized jeepney and replaced the
old jeepney unit and not completely phasing out. (Odong, C. 2024)
According to officials, the cooperatives would be able to obtain bank financing and a
government rebate ranging from 200,000 to 300,000 pesos per car to help them with the
financial burden of the shift. Drivers opposed to the phase-out believe that joining a
cooperative and purchasing a new vehicle will leave them in debt and unable to earn enough
money to live. (Castro, P. 2024)
