MODULE IN SCIENCE 5
FIRST QUARTER/ WEEK 4/ DAY 1

Objectives

In this module you will learn to investigate how materials happen to change due to
application of heat.

Your Lesson for Today

Heat can bring about physical changes in matter. Some solid materials melt when
enough heat is applied to them. A common example is a melting ice when it is placed out of
the refrigerator. The ice absorbs heat from the surroundings, which will then melt after a few
minutes. On the other hand, if water is subjected to heat, it evaporates.
Application of heat to some materials can cause physical change.
Heat does not only produce physical change in a material, sometimes heating a material
causes it to undergo chemical changes.
A chemical change occurs to materials when heat is applied. Change in color, taste and
odor, production of smoke, ash, bubbles, fire, new products and even heat are the indications
of chemical change.

MODULE IN SCIENCE 5
FIRST QUARTER/WEEK 4/DAY 2

Objectives

In this module you will learn to identify the evidences affecting chemical change in the
presence and absence of oxygen and with the application of heat.

Your Lesson for Today

In the previous modules, you have learned that when a substance underwent
chemical change, the composition of the material change, the properties of the original
substance are lost, and new substance is formed. But what are the evidences proving
that matter changes chemically?

Let’s Find out more by helping Mica, our curious detective in exploring the
Evidences of Chemical Change.

Hello, I am Detective Mica! I am wondering, how

materials change in the presence and absence of oxygen
and also, when it is applied with heat? Can you help me
out with this please? Wow! That’s great! Let’s get started
by reading the information below.

EVIDENCES OF CHEMICAL CHANGE

Whenever a material undergoes chemical change, one or more of these
evidences are observed:
1. Formation of a new product. When a material is exposed to oxygen and
water a material starts to form a new substance on its surface. Rust forms
in metals because of the reaction of metals to oxygen. This situation
shows Oxidation, a chemical reaction aided by oxygen. Combustion or
burning process of a material takes place with oxygen. Through
combustion new product is formed called ash (abo in Filipino).
2. Production of heat. There are some instances wherein chemical change
results to sudden heating or cooling of material.
3. Formation of gas. Formation of gas indicates change in composition. For
example, when a material is burning, gas in the form of smoke is released.
Bubbles and foul odor show carbon dioxide, type of gas is being released.
4. Formation of precipitate. Precipitate refers to solid particles that formed
in a solution. This precipitate often called as curdle has a bad odor and
produce from two liquids being combined.

that we can use in our investigation. Look! I
found Milk, sugar, egg plant and potato.
Follow me as we do some exciting
investigation and find out the results.

Investigation No. 1: Solid from two liquids

In a container, a cup of vinegar is added and½ cup of milk is
gradually placed. The picture on the right side shows that the milk mixed
with vinegar underwent chemical change. It coagulates or forms solid
material at the bottom of the container.
What do you call the solid material at the bottom of the container?
____________________
If solid particles formed in a solution, what evidence of chemical
change is formed? Formation of ______________________ .
When milk is spoiled it tastes sour, smells foul and forms curdle. These observations prove
that milk underwent chemical change.
Investigation No. 2: Black Sugar
In a spoon, a small portion of sugar is placed and heated under the
flame. The picture on the right side shows that the sugar changed its color
to black. This product is called ash or carbon and we cannot let it go back
to its original form of sugar.
What evidence of chemical change is shown when new substance
is formed? Formation of _________________________ .
What is the process of burning materials with the help of oxygen?
__________________________.

Investigation No. 3: Bubbly Potato

In a beaker container with potato cubes, a cup of hydrogen peroxide
(Agua oxinada) was added. You noticed on the picture that bubbles formed
around the potato. Aside from that, the container became warm as
hydrogen peroxide change from white to clear liquid.
What two evidences of chemical change exhibit in investigation
no.3? Formation of _____________ and
production of ____________.

Investigation No. 4: Changing Color Eggplant

An egg plant was cut into 3 and exposed to air for 5 minutes. Look at the appearance of
the eggplant on the picture before and after being exposed to air. Did you notice that the color
of the eggplant change from whitish to brownish? Therefore, it underwent chemical change.

OBJECTIVE:
This module will help you describe the different changes brought by nature,
humans and other living organisms. They are global warming, greenhouse effect,
pollution, ozone depletion, acid rain and smog.

LET’S START
In the previous modules, you have learned that everything undergoes change. One of these is
our environment. Some changes are brought about by nature while some are humans and other living
organisms. Here are some pictures that show these changes.

Garbage in water Air-conditioning unit Fumes from factories Kaingin system

Improper disposal of garbage, modernization of technologies, fumes emitted by vehicles and

industries, pollutants, deforestation, incineration and kaingin system cause these changes. To know more,
try to understand these:
Fume – gas, vapor or smoke
Pollutant - something that cause pollution
Deforestation – action or process of clearing forests.
Incineration- is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of organic substances contained in
waste materials.
Kaingin system – technique of clearing land by cutting down and burning of trees and plant growth in an
area for cultivation purposes locally known as slash and burn system.

LET’S LEARN
Here are the changes that we are facing today. These changes become
challenges in our daily living.

1. Global warming is an increase in the average temperature of earth’s atmosphere. It

happens when the greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide from the
burning of fuels trap the heat in the troposphere. The natural process by which heat
is trapped by greenhouse gases is called greenhouse effect. This will result to lack
of freshwater supply in the community, flooding in low-lying areas, soil erosion,
drought or lack of rainfall, shortage of food production by plants, outbreak of
airborne diseases, contamination of water with toxic substances and extinction of
some species of plants and animals.
2. Ozone depletion occurs when the ozone layer in the stratosphere that protects
Earth from sun’s ultraviolet radiation is destroyed by gases called
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). These gases are found in cleaning agents, aerosol
sprays, polystyrene plastic foam {Styrofoam) and refrigerants. It can cause skin
cancer in humans, decrease photosynthetic activity in plants, disturb the
development stages of some marine organisms and destroy other life forms.
3. Pollution is the contamination of soil, water and air. Improper disposal of garbage
destroys the soil and clog waterways causing water to stagnate. Stagnant waters
are the breeding places of mosquitoes and other pests. Oil spills pollute the water
too. Toxic chemicals from factories and vehicles pollute the air we breathe. These
chemicals poison and kill humans, plants and animals.
4. Acid rain occurs when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide combine with air moisture.
These two compounds are caused by smoke belching of vehicles and factories
which release gaseous pollutants that become a strong acid. Acid rain harms trees
crops and animals. It also causes the decay of concrete structures and the corrosion
of metal material. Some gases that make acid rain may be inhaled by people
directly. This will cause respiratory diseases.
5. Smog is a combination of smoke, fog, sulfur dioxide and other gases. It happens
when the moisture air close to the ground is trapped and unable to escape. People
who are exposed to smog may develop respiratory diseases. It may cause death to
both plants and animals.

MODULE IN SCIENCE 5
FIRST QUARTER/WEEK 4/DAY 4

OBJECTIVE: List/Enumerate practices in preventing changes that pose harm/hazard in

the environment and living organisms.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

 Practices to prevent changes that pose harm/hazard in the environment and living
organism.

Let’s Acquire knowledge! ( What I need to know?)

The environment has been badly affected by some chemical changes brought about by
human activities. We have to avoid the bad effects of the changes that adversely affect our
life, property and environment.

Below are some ways we can practice to prevent the harmful effects of some changes
on the environment and living organism.
1. Proper wastes disposal, wastes are part of normal life, we need to practice the
principle of 5Rs which you will study in the next lesson.
2. Avoid practices that will produce acid rain, increase global temperature or depute the
ozone layer. We can sacrifice some of our luxurious ways such as use of aerosols, for
the good planet Earth.
3. Let us do our share in maintaining a healthful environment. We must avoid the use of
too much electricity and gasoline. We must also avoid burning rubber tires and plastic.
4. Refrigerator and air conditioners are very useful to us. They should be well maintained.
When they breakdown and left alone, they may leak CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) that
can lead to the thinning of the ozone layer.
5. Vehicles cars, jeepneys and trucks remain very useful for many long years if they are
well maintain regularly serviced. If vehicles are properly maintain, they will not produce
black smoke and release pollutants into our environment.
6. Plants and trees are our life. They are very important to us such as giving fresh air
water oxygen. It serves as foods, shelters, protection shield during typhoon and
erosion. Making furnitures and some parts of our house. If we stop Kaingin System or
Incineration and do planting of more plants and trees in our mother Earth it will be
most helpful to us.
