Setting Out Plan for 20' x 20' Gazebo
Title of Project: Setting Out a 20' x 20' Gazebo Using the 3:4:5 Method
Objective:
To accurately set out the 20' x 20' gazebo foundation using the 3:4:5 method and proper spacing
techniques to ensure precision in construction.
Tools and Equipment Required:
● Measuring tape
● Chalk line
● Steel stakes (instead of wooden stakes)
● String line
● Hammer
● Spirit level
● Carpenter’s square
● Pegs and nails
● Marking paint or spray
Procedure for Setting Out the Gazebo
Step 1: Site Preparation
● Clear the site of any debris, vegetation, and obstacles.
● Identify the reference point where the gazebo will be positioned.
● Mark the approximate center of the gazebo using a steel stake.
Step 2: Establishing the First Baseline
● Drive a steel stake into the ground at one corner of the gazebo location.
● Measure 20' in one direction using the measuring tape and drive another steel stake at that
point.
● Tie a string line between the two steel stakes to form the first baseline.
● Use a spirit level to ensure the line is straight and at the correct elevation.
Step 3: Creating a Perfect Right Angle Using the 3:4:5 Method
● From the first stake, measure 3' along the baseline and mark it with chalk.
● From the same starting point, measure 4' in the perpendicular direction where the second
side of the gazebo will be located and mark it.
● Measure diagonally between these two marks. If the distance is exactly 5', the corner
forms a 90-degree angle. Adjust as needed.
● Drive a steel stake at the 4' mark to establish the perpendicular side.
Step 4: Completing the Rectangular Layout
● From the new steel stake, measure 20' parallel to the first baseline and drive a third steel
stake.
● Repeat the 3:4:5 method to check for square corners.
● Connect all four stakes with string lines to complete the rectangular layout.
● Cross-measure diagonally between opposite corners to verify that the distances are equal,
confirming the rectangle is square.
Step 5: Marking Post Locations
● Measure and mark the positions for the 7 metal posts along the perimeter.
● Use pegs to mark each post location.
● Double-check all measurements before proceeding to excavation.
Final Checks and Adjustments
● Ensure all measurements are accurate and square before proceeding.
● Confirm that each post location is properly marked.
● Use marking paint to highlight key areas.
Conclusion:
This setting-out plan ensures the gazebo is properly aligned, square, and accurately positioned
for successful construction. Precision in setting out prevents structural misalignment and ensures
a solid foundation for the project.
CSEC BUILDING TECHNOLOGY (CONSTRUCTION) PLAN SHEET
Title of Project: 20' x 20' Gazebo Strip Footing and Roof Construction
Procedure for Constructing the Strip Footing and Roof
Strip Footing Construction
1. Site Preparation
○ Clear the area of debris and vegetation.
○ Mark out the locations for the 7 strip footings (each 9" wide, 2' deep).
○ Tools & Materials: Measuring tape, chalk line, stakes, string line, shovel, pickaxe.
2. Excavation
○ Dig 7 trenches, each 9" wide and 2' deep, where the steel posts will be placed.
○ Tools & Materials: Shovel, pickaxe, wheelbarrow, spirit level.
3. Reinforcement Placement
○ Attach steel reinforcement (rebar) to each of the 7 metal footings.
○ Ensure rebars are securely fastened to provide additional stability.
○ Tools & Materials: Steel rods, binding wire, pliers, wire cutter.
4. Concrete Mixing and Pouring
○ Mix concrete in a 1:2:4 ratio (cement:sand:gravel).
○ Pour into each trench, ensuring the rebars and metal footings are properly
embedded.
○ Use a vibrator or tamper to remove air pockets.
○ Tools & Materials: Cement, sand, gravel, water, concrete mixer, shovel, level,
trowel, wheelbarrow.
5. Curing
○ Keep the concrete moist for at least 7 days to ensure proper curing.
○ Tools & Materials: Watering can, plastic sheet, hose.
Roof Construction
1. Rafter Installation
○ Cut 2" x 4" lumber to size for rafters.
○ Install rafters at appropriate spacing.
○ Tools & Materials: Saw, measuring tape, nails, hammer, drill, level.
2. Plywood Sheathing
○ Attach plywood sheets over the rafters.
○ Tools & Materials: Plywood, screws, drill, screwdriver, measuring tape.
3. Waterproof Barrier Application
○ Lay down a waterproof membrane over the plywood.
○ Tools & Materials: Roofing felt, nails, hammer, staple gun.
4. Shingles Installation
○ Install asphalt shingles starting from the bottom up.
○ Tools & Materials: Shingles, nails, hammer, utility knife, measuring tape.
5. Fascia Board and Drip Edge Installation
○ Attach fascia boards along the roof edges.
○ Secure drip edges to direct water runoff.
○ Tools & Materials: Fascia board, drip edge, nails, hammer, saw, measuring tape.
