1.A MED student at MKU was carrying a study on the influence of a teaching method on
students’ performance in English. She obtained the following scores:
49 63 59 58 49 51 52 62 37 30
49 35 52 50 42 54 32 57 41 42
56 44 46 63 44 40 50 46 53 48
37 46 53 68 66 58 36 40 56 37
66 43 40 43 51 59 42 52 46 57
Required:
Staring with 30-34 as the lowest class interval,
a) Make a grouped frequency distribution
b) Use the table to find the:
i) mean mark (2mks)
ii) Median mark (2mks)
iii) Mode (2mks)
iv) 80th percentile (2mks)
v) Standard deviation (3mks)
b) Comment on the distribution (2mks)
2) In a Certain Secondary School, there are two teachers of English: Mr. Splendid and Mr.
Charming and each of them were assigned to one of the Form 4 classes. Mr. Splendid had 9
students, and Mr. Charming had 8 students. At the end of the year, each class took the same
standardized test. Mr. Splendid students had an average test score of 49.44, with a standard
deviation of 10.38; and Mr. Charming students had an average test score of 68.88, with a
standard deviation of 12.30.
Test the hypothesis that Mr. Splendid and Mr. Charming are equally effective teachers. Use a
0.10 level of significance. (Assume that student performance is approximately normal.) [6mks]

3) Some travel agents claim that honeymoon hot spots vary according to age of the bride. A Master
of Educational Psychology student carried out a survey to establish the Claim. He interviewed a
sample of 280 recent brides as to where they spent their honeymoons. The information is given
in Table below.
Location 20–29 30–39 40–49 50 and over
Maasai Mara 15 25 25 20
Capital city 15 25 25 10
Mountain Region 10 25 15 5
Mombasa 20 25 15 5
i) State the null and alternative hypothesis (2mks)
ii) Compute a chi-square test for the above data (5mks)
iii) Test, at the 1% level of significance, whether there is sufficient evidence in the data to conclude
that honeymoon hot spots vary according to age of the bride. (2mks)
4.The table shows a Verbal Reasoning test score,x,and an English test score,y,for each of a
random sample of 8 children who took both tests.
Child A B C D E F G H
x 112 113 110 113 112 114 109 113
y 69 65 75 70 70 75 68 76
i) Calculate Pearson correlation coefficient between Verbal Reasoning test score,x,and
an English test score,y. (5mks)
ii) Calculate the value of the product moment correlation coefficient between the
scores in Verbal Reasoning and English. (5mks)
iii) Estimate the Englisg score, y, for a student who obtained a score of 9 in the verbal
reasoning test. (2mk)
