SAP Note 405827 - Linux - Recommended File Systems v25

The document provides recommendations for selecting file systems when using SAP solutions on Linux, emphasizing that not all file systems proposed by Linux distributions are suitable for all applications. It outlines specific recommendations for various database systems, including IBM DB2, Oracle DB, SAP ASE, SAP HANA, and SAP MaxDB, while noting that certain file systems like btrfs should be avoided. Additionally, it lists standard file systems for different Linux distributions as a guide for users.

Symptom

You want to use an SAP solution on Linux and search for decision support during
the selection of the file system to be used.

Other Terms

Linux, EXT3, EXT4, GPFS, NFS, OCFS2, XFS

Reason and Prerequisites

The SAP-supported Linux distributions propose several file systems that you can
select. Under certain circumstances, however, not every file system proposed by
the relevant Linux distribution is also recommended for the use of all
applications or supported by the respective application manufacturer. This
applies in particular to use on database systems.

Solution

The use of a file system on Linux is allowed for SAP applications, provided the
relevant Linux distributor and the database manufacturer, if necessary, also
ensure this support. The same also applies for the use of storage systems.
In the Linux environment, we do not certify any file systems and storage systems
for use at the SAP application server level, and we also make no recommendations
for certain file systems and storage systems.

Nevertheless, other software solutions may not allow all of the file systems to
be used to the same extent.
The following is an overview of the recommendations for the relevant
applications as far as they are known:

• IBM DB2 LUW

IBM Knowledge Center - Recommended file systems
• DB2 11.1 for Linux UNIX, and Windows
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSEPGG_11.1.0/com.ibm.db2.luw
• DB2 10.5 for Linux UNIX, and Windows
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSEPGG_10.5.0/com.ibm.db2.luw
• DB2 9.7 for Linux UNIX, and Windows

○ Oracle 11
1114181 - Oracle Database 11g - file system support on Linux

• SAP ASE
○ No restrictions are known. SAP ASE supports all file systems
supported by the relevant Linux distributor, but no RAW devices.

• SAP HANA
○ SAP Notes 2009879 - SAP HANA Guidelines for Red Hat Enterprise
Linux (RHEL) Operating System and 1944799 - SAP HANA Guidelines
for SLES Operating System Installation recommend the use of XFS as
long as your hardware or technology partner does not recommend
otherwise.
(Currently, only XFS, EXT3, GPFS, NFS, and OCFS2 are allowed to be
used in the SAP HANA environment.)

• SAP MaxDB
SAP MaxDB generally supports all file systems supported by the

relevant Linux distributor. However, problems (crashes due to read

errors) can occur if btrfs is used, so we strongly recommend against
the use of this file system type (see 2704435 - Crashes with
btrfs).

If there are no recommendations or restrictions for the relevant application,

you can refer to the standard file systems for data partitionings of the
respective distributions as a guide. Here is an overview of them:

• Oracle Linux
OL 7: XFS

OL 6: EXT4

OL 5: EXT3

• Red Hat Enterprise Linux

RHEL 7: XFS

RHEL 6: EXT4

RHEL 5: EXT3

• SUSE Linux Enterprise Server

SLES 12: XFS

SLES 11: EXT3

SLES 10: EXT3
