Rules and Procedures
1. Room use
a) The teacher’s desk is for the teacher and students should not be crowding around
it or taking things from it unless asked. Students need to ask to take things from
storage areas and return it to the same place they took from.
b) Student desks should be cleaned at the end of class and belongings, such as
backpacks, should be stored on a counter or next to a wall that is not near the
student’s desks.
c) Students will have access to all classroom materials but should only use them
when it is an appropriate time
d) Students may dump anything into the trash except food. The sink should be used
to wash hands and not to fill water bottles.
e) When students need to use the bathroom, I will not require them to raise their
hands and ask. They are to write their name on a whiteboard or piece of paper to
show they are “signing out” of the classroom. They will also take a hall pass with
them so they are not seen as just wandering the halls.
2. Transitions in and out of the classroom
a) When students enter the classroom for class, they should come in quietly and
look to the board for instructions on what to take out of their backpacks for class
before storing them against a wall or on a counter. They will also be asked to
answer the question of the day once they have taken their assigned seat and
retrieved all of their materials for the period.
b) When class is over, students should pick up all belongings that are around them
and put them in their backpacks. Students need to clean around their desks to
make sure no trash is around. Once their area is clean and they have gotten all their
materials, they are free to leave for their next class.
3. Out of the room procedures
a) I have already established how the “using the bathroom” procedure works above.
Students will be expected to fill their water bottles before entering class but if
necessary, they may raise their hand to leave quickly to go to the drinking fountain.
b) When the students need to go to the library or the resource room, it will be a
class activity, unless it is for a project where the teacher does not need to be
present. Unless asked for a specific reason, students should not need to go to either
place during my class unless it is for my class.
c) If the school office calls for a student, I will inform them and ask them to take a
hall pass, if it is a quick trip. If the student is leaving, I will ask them to make sure
they have all the materials they need such as homework or their textbook. I will
write them a note to act as a hall pass, specifying where the student is going and
why.
d) Students must ask to go to their locker if necessary, meaning if they forgot their
books or notebooks. There should not be another reason for the student to need to
go during class so I will encourage students to make sure they have all the
materials they need for the period.
e) In regards to a fire, the school will have a procedure in place. I will inform the
students on what they are to do if a drill happens. I will remind them to stay calm,
form a line, and not take anything with them to make sure we get out on time and
safely.
4. Beginning of class
a) Attendance will be taken once the bell rings. I will have a seating chart so that is
how I will know who is here and who is not.
b) Late students should have a note with them from the office that I will keep until
the end of class so that I can mark them tardy
c) Students will always be expected to bring a notebook, a pencil, and a laptop or
Chromebook if the school supplies one. This expectation will be established on day
one and if there is something they need for the next day, students will be told prior.
5. End of class
a) To close class, I will ask the class a question that will go along with the lesson
being learned. If the question is answered and students look to be understanding
the content, then we can move on for the next day
b) Students will be asked to not put away materials if someone is talking as it is
distracting. However, once class is over, they are welcome to pack up and leave
after cleaning up their desk area
c) I will dismiss students with the bell or before if we have covered all material
6. Whole-class activities
a) Students will be expected to participate in all group activities unless there are
prior accommodations. Participation means engaging, talking with peers, and not
staring into space and distracting a neighbor
b) Some signals for students' attention will include clapping or having a phrase that
I say and students will respond in kind. I expect most students to respond the first
time and all to respond the second
c) Talking with peers during activities is encouraged but I will ask them to stay on
topic
d) Asking for help will be another expectation as things cannot be done if students
do not know how to do them. Students will be expected to ask peers for help first
before coming to the teacher
e) Assignments or homework will be expected at the beginning of class. If it is an
assignment that is being completed in class, I will have a basket that they are
expected to put it in before leaving the classroom.
f) If tasks are completed before the end of class, students will be expected to either
do other work, help a fellow classmate, sit quietly, read a book, or try to get ahead.
Students should not be goofing off if finished with work early and there are
consequences set in place if a student is a distraction to the class for that reason.
g) Make-up work is accepted but only after two days. There will be points taken off
for each day it was late. Students will be allowed to turn in work late without points
taken off if they have an excused absence or have made prior arrangements
7. Small-group procedures
a) Students will be given instructions before breaking up into groups. If there are
questions, the teacher will be there to help.
b) If materials are needed for small group activity, there should only be one person
retrieving the materials for the group to decrease traffic around the classroom
c) Within the group, students are expected to engage with the material and each
other. There should not be moving around the classroom unless the activity requires
it and the group should be staying on task. Groups are not supposed to distract
each other or prevent others from doing their work. Small group activities are
graded based on participation and the students will be made aware of that before
breaking up into groups. The teacher will be constantly observing to make sure
everyone is on task.
