(5) Executive Summary
This research investigates the multifaceted impact of social media on
the mental well-being of Grade 8 STE students at Batan Academy. While
acknowledging the potential for positive social connection and community
building, the study focuses on the negative consequences associated with constant
exposure to curated, often unrealistic portrayals of others' lives. We will explore the
links between social media usage and increased anxiety, depression, cyberbullying,
sleep deprivation, and feelings of inadequacy stemming from social comparison.
The research addresses knowledge gaps in existing literature by comparing the
effects of different social media platforms and content types (e.g., gaming vs. social
interaction) on mental health outcomes. The findings will provide valuable insights
into the complex relationship between social media engagement and the mental
health of adolescents, informing strategies for promoting responsible social media
use and supporting student well-being.
(6) INTRODUCTION
This research investigates the impact of social media on the mental well-
being of Grade 8 students. The study's rationale stems from growing concerns
about adolescents' excessive social media use and its potential negative effects
on their mental health. The significance lies in understanding this complex
relationship to inform interventions promoting responsible technology use and
supporting students' mental well-being. The study will utilize a theoretical
framework grounded in existing research on social comparison, cyberbullying,
and the psychological effects of technology.
(6.1) RATIONALE
This study investigates the impact of social media on the mental health of
Grade 8 students at Batan Academy due to growing concerns about the
potential negative effects of excessive social media use on adolescents' well-
being. The rationale is that understanding this relationship is crucial for
developing effective interventions and support systems to promote responsible
technology use and safeguard students' mental health within the school
environment. The study's significance lies in its potential to inform school
policies, parental guidance, and educational programs aimed at mitigating the
risks associated with social media while harnessing its potential benefits.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study of social media's impact on the mental health of Grade 8
students at Batan Academy is crucial for enabling early intervention strategies,
informing school policies and parental guidance, and contributing to a broader
understanding of adolescent well-being in the digital age. By identifying specific
social media-related challenges, such as cyberbullying or sleep disruption, the
research can inform the development of targeted support programs and
resources within the school, promoting responsible technology use and
mitigating potential harm. The findings will provide valuable insights for
educators, parents, and policymakers, leading to evidence-based interventions
and a more supportive environment for students navigating the complexities of
social media.
(6.2) SCIENTIFIC BASIS/THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
This study will utilize a data collection approach, drawing upon established
theories in psychology and sociology to understand the complex relationship
between social media use and mental well-being among Grade 8 STE students.
The theoretical framework will integrate:
Social Comparison Theory: This theory posits that individuals evaluate
their own opinions and abilities by comparing themselves to others. In the
context of social media, this leads to upward comparisons (comparing oneself to
seemingly "perfect" lives online), potentially resulting in feelings of inadequacy
and low self-esteem.
Uses and Gratifications Theory: This framework examines how individuals
actively select and use media to satisfy specific needs and wants. The study will
explore how students use social media to fulfill social needs, escape boredom,
or seek information, and how these uses relate to their mental health.
Cultivation Theory: This theory suggests that long-term exposure to media
cultivates particular perceptions of the world. The research will investigate
whether heavy social media use cultivates unrealistic expectations about body
image, relationships, and success, potentially negatively impacting mental
health.
Quantitative data analysis will employ statistical methods such as
correlation and regression analysis to explore relationships between social
media usage patterns (time spent, platforms used, content consumed) and
mental health indicators (anxiety, depression, self-esteem). Qualitative data will
be analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes in
students' experiences with social media and its impact on their well-being.
HYPOTHESIS
There is a significant positive correlation between the amount of time Grade 8
students at Batan Academy spend on social media and their levels of reported anxiety
and depression. Furthermore, the type of social media usage (e.g., passive
consumption vs. active engagement) will moderate this relationship.

existing literature and establishing a robust theoretical framework.
The literature review highlights several key areas: Firstly, the impact

To identify the types of social media platforms and content most
frequently used by students.
To assess the correlation between social media use and
indicators of mental health (anxiety, depression, self-esteem,
