RECAP
In your previous lesson, you’ve learned that electromagnetic waves are
either ionizing or non-ionizing radiations. EM waves carrying lower energy
levels are classified as non-ionizing and are typically not harmful while those
carrying higher energy levels are considered ionizing and may cause harm to
living organisms. What about the applications of EM waves? Can you still
remember them? To refresh your mind, answer this simple activity.

Directions: Match the different forms of EM waves in column A with their

corresponding applications in column B. Write the letter of your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.

Column A ( EM waves ) Column B ( Applications )

___ 1. Microwaves A. TV’s remote control
___ 2. UV rays B. Satellite communication
___ 3. Gamma rays C. Fluorescent lamp
___ 4. Infrared rays D. Radiotherapy
___ 5. X-rays E. Baggage scanner
It’s good to know that you can still remember the applications of the
different types of EM waves.

Knowing the applications of EM waves will lead you to these questions:

a) What are the effects of EM waves’ applications to us?

b) How do these applications of EM waves affect us and the environment?
To know the answer to these questions, you will now continue learning
about EM wave’s applications and their effects on living things and the
environment.

LESSON
Different technologies nowadays rely on different forms of EM
waves. These technologies or applications of EM waves pose different effects
to us and the environment. They could result to either positive or negative
effects.

Here are some examples of EM wave’s applications and their effects.

1. Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy uses gamma ray that is
ionizing, highly penetrating and have enough
energy to destroy or kill cancer cells. That is why,
it is widely used as a cancer treatment. But the
irony is, it can also kill exposed healthy living
cells and may also cause cancer and mutation.
Since gamma ray has the highest energy level
among the EM waves, it is also the most
dangerous form of EM radiation.
2. Computed Tomography or CT scan
CT scan uses x-ray to diagnose and monitor
different kinds of diseases and abnormalities in
our body such as tumors or bone fractures. It
provides us an image of our internal body parts.
Therefore, its positive effect is that it helps us
identify what our illness is, see how severe it is
and it also gives the medical experts ideas on
what kind of treatment they have to do with their
patients. But CT scan uses x-ray which is next to gamma ray, therefore, it
may also cause damage to healthy cells if overexposed to it. It can also cause
cancer.
3. Germicidal lamp/ UV lamp

One of the positive effects of using UV lamps

such as germicidal lamp is its ability to disinfect
surfaces by killing the bacteria and preventing
them from reproducing or multiplying. Some UV
lamps are used to check forged banknotes and
prevent counterfeits. But some UV lamps emit
harmful ultraviolet rays that can also cause
damage to living cells if overexposed to it, such as
sunburn and skin cancer.
4. TV/radio broadcasting and satellite communications
Whenever you use your cell phone, watch on your TV and listen
to your favourite radio station, you are actually using radio waves and
microwaves. Through these applications of radio waves and
microwaves, our way of communication have improved a lot. We’re able
to get updated from the real-time events happening in our country and
all over the world. We’re also able to tune in to our favourite radio
stations and listen to the latest news and updates. Since radio waves
have the lowest energy level in the spectrum, until now, there is no
concrete study as to their negative effects. While microwave used in
microwave oven may cause internal heating of body tissues like the way
it heats the food.

5. Remote control
One of the common applications of infrared radiation is the use
of remote control. It allows you to change the TV’s channel without
standing or getting off your place. Note also that all objects emit infrared
radiation. And because of that, applications like thermal scanners,
infrared cameras or night vision goggles are used to show temperature
variations of individuals or different objects, and even see in the dark.
Remember that some of the applications of electromagnetic waves
cause positive and negative effects. It depends on the energy level
carried by the EM wave involved and the time of exposure. The higher
the energy level and the longer the time of exposure, the greater the
impact on living organisms and the environment.

The following activities will help you understand further the effects of EM
wave’s applications:

WRAP-UP
To summarize what you have learned, complete the paragraph
below by filling in the missing word/s. Choose your answer from the word
box below.

• lower • radio waves

• higher • gamma rays
• exposure time • positive
• energy level • negative
Electromagnetic waves have different applications that affect us
and the environment. They could result to either ____________ or ___________
effects. Their effects depend on our ______________ and ______________ carried
by the EM wave involved. EM waves carrying __________ energy level have
greater impact than those carrying __________ energy level. The most
dangerous among the applications of EM waves are those using
______________ because they are the most ionizing and highly penetrating form
of EM radiation. While applications of ____________ with the lowest energy level
are uncertain of their long-term effects.
Understanding the different effects of EM waves’ applications is very
important for us to know what technologies should be used, how and when
they will be used and prevent getting the negative result of using these
technologies/applications.

VALUING
Are you familiar with greenhouse effect? Did you know that EM
radiation is involved in this? You will now do a reflective activity about
greenhouse effect and the infrared radiation.

Activity 3: The Greenhouse Effect and the Infrared Radiation!

Objective:
Realize the importance of knowing the effects of EM radiation on living
things and the environment.

Materials: Pen and paper

Procedure: Read and understand the paragraph below then answer the guide
questions. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
Light from the sun comprises different forms of EM radiation. Some are
transmitted, reflected and some are absorbed by the Earth’s surface. As the
Earth’s surface absorbs the sunlight, it heats up and emits IR or infrared
radiation. Some of the emitted IR from the earth’s surface reflect back to the
space while some are absorbed by the greenhouse gases (CO2, H2O and CH4)
in the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases then re-radiate some of the IR
back to the Earth’s surface causing it to be warmer. This is known as the
Greenhouse effect.
Guide questions:
1. How does infrared radiation emitted by the greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere back to the earth’s surface affect us?
__________________________________________________________________

2. What do you think will happen if there’s an increase in greenhouse

gases’ concentration in the atmosphere?
__________________________________________________________________

3. As a student, what can you do to minimize the negative effects of

further emission of IR or heat rays back to the Earth’s surface?
