SANNI ABACHA'S BIRTH AND ORIGIN


Gen. Sani Abacha Nigerian Head of State born September 20, 1943, Kano, Nigeria—
died June 8, 1998, Abuja was a Nigerian military leader, who served as Head of State
(1993–98).
He was born and brought up in Kano state to a polygamus Kanuri family (originally
from present-day Borno state) where his father Abacha Ahmad,had multiple wives
including his mother Fathima Abacha.He was the 10th out of 12 children ,his father
was a Kanuri farmer and trader while his mother a homemaker, specifically, his
family originated from the Bulabulin area of Gowza local government area in Borno
State, Northeastern Nigeria. Abacha’s early lifeand upbringing were deeply rooted in
Kano, a major cultural and economic hub in Nigeria.He was born during the british
colonial era in Nigeria which hada significant impact on the country’s
politics,economy, and society.
His family, like many others in Nigeria at the time, faced economic challenge,
including poverty and limited access to education and healthcare.Abacha was raised
in a devout Islamic household, with his family adhering to traditional Islamic pratices
and customes.His upbringing emphasized respect for elders and tradtional authority
figures, which influenced his leadership style.
Abacha schooled in Kano primary school before proceeding to Nigerian Military
Training College (NMTC)in Kaduna,and was commisioned in 1963 after he had
attended the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot,England.He was married to
Maryam Abacha (née Jiddah)who bore several children including Mohammed
Abacha, Ibrahim Abacha and Fatima Abacha.
Abacha received his formal military training at Nigerian and British military training
colleges. He later joined the Nigerian Army, where his military career spanned over
three decades.He rose through the ranks in the Nigerian military and by 1983 had
achieved the rank of brigadier when he assisted Ibrahim Babangida in overthrowing
Shehu Shagari, who had been elected to his second presidential term in 1983.
Muhammad Buhari became Nigeria’s leader, but just two years later Babangida
overthrew Buhari and installed himself as leader with Abacha second in command.
Elections were held in 1993 and were won by Moshood Abiola, a candidate
supposedly supported by Babangida, who, however, annulled the elections and set up
a civilian interim government, which Abacha quickly overthrew.
