French Revolution
What Was It?
→It was a big, messy, and dramatic change in France where people decided to get rid of their
king and try something new.
→ It happened from 1789 to 1799.
Why Did It Happen? (Causes)
Unfairness:
France had a system where some people (nobles and clergy) had all the power and didn't pay
taxes, while everyone else (commoners) had to pay a lot.
Think of it like some kids getting all the candy, and other kids having to pay for it!
Money Problems:
The king, Louis XVI, spent a lot of money, and France was in debt.
Also there were food shortages.
New Ideas:
People started talking about "liberty," "equality," and "fraternity" (brotherhood). They wanted a
fair government.
Key Events
Storming of the Bastille (1789):
This was like the start of the revolution. People stormed a prison (the Bastille) to get weapons.
This is a very famous event, and is still celebrated in France today.
Reign of Terror:
A really scary time when lots of people were executed, especially by a machine called the
guillotine.
This was a very violent period.
Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte:
A general named Napoleon took control and ended the revolution.
Important Ideas
"Liberty, Equality, Fraternity":
This was the revolution's slogan. It means freedom, fairness, and everyone being like brothers
and sisters.
End of Monarchy:
The revolution got rid of the king and queen.
