Undefined Functions II

The document provides exercises related to identifying values of x for which certain mathematical functions are undefined. It includes examples and hints on how to determine when a function's denominator equals zero, leading to undefined values. The exercises involve various functions and require the reader to solve for specific values of x that affect the domain of those functions.

Undefined functions II

Example:

Two functions are defined as follows:

g(x) = 4x + 3

f(x) = x+1
2 x +7

State the value of x for which f(x) is undefined.

Hint: For a function to be undefined or non existent, it’s
denominator must go to 0. Hence, equate the denominator to 0
and solve for the value of x which makes the function f(x)
undefined.

So,
x+1=0
x=0-1
 x = -1

Hence, the value of x for which f(x) is undefined is -1.

Exercise

1) Given that
f: x ⟶ 3 - x

g: x ⟶ x−5
x+ 2

State the value of x for which g(x) is not defined.

2) Two functions are defined as follows:

g(x) = 4x + 3

f(x) =
2 x +7
x+1

State the value of x for which f(x) is undefined.

3) Given the function h(x) = 5−x , determine the value of x for

2 x +3

which the function is undefined.

4) The functions f and g are defined by

f(x) = 2 x +1 and g(x) = x – 3.

9

State a value of x that CANNOT be in the domain of f.

5) The function h(x) = 4−x , determine the value of x for which
2 x +3

the function is not defined.

6) The function g(x) = 3 x −2

4 x +1

State the real value of x which cannot be in the domain of:

i. g(x)
ii. g-1(x)
