Input devices

Input devices are devices used to enter data to a computer. Input devices can be either manual (The
user has to enter the data to the computer) or direct data entry devices, DDE (No human interaction,
inputs automatically)

Manual Input devices,

1. Keyboard
2. Mouse
3. Touchpads
4. Tracker balls
5. Remote controls
6. Joysticks
7. Driving wheel
8. Touch screens (Remember they are both input and output devices)
9. Scanners
10. Cameras
11. Microphones
12. Sensors
13. Light pen

Question – Study what each of these devices can do and how they work. Write two sentences, worth
two marks defining each of them. Add another sentence mentioning how they work in brief.

Direct data entry input devices,

1. Magnetic stripe readers


2. Chip and PIN readers
3. RFID readers
4. Optical character recognition (OCR)
5. Optical mark recognition (OMR)
6. Bar code readers
7. QR scanners

Question – Mention two advantages and two disadvantages for each DDE device.

Question – Compare OCR and OMR (4 marks)

Output devices

Output devices are devices used to send data from a computer to a user or other device.

Output devices include,

1. Monitors
2. Touch screens (Both an input and output device)
3. Multimedia projectors
4. Printers – Laser printers, Inkjet printer, Dot matrix printer
5. Plotter
6. 3D printers
7. Speakers
8. Actuators

Question – Study what each of these devices can do and how they work. Write two sentences, worth
two marks defining each of them. Add another sentence mentioning how they work in brief.

Question – How do actuators work? Give 2 systems where actuators are used (4 marks)

Question – Compare the laser printers to inkjet printers (4 marks)
