Introduction of Microsoft office

Microsoft Office is a suite of productivity applications developed by Microsoft. It was first

announced by Bill Gates on August 1, 1988, at COMDEX in Las Vegas. The initial versions
included Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Over the years, it has
expanded to include various other applications and services, becoming a ubiquitous tool in
business, education, and personal productivity.

Objectives
 enhance productivity: Provide tools that help users perform various tasks efficiently, such as
document creation, data analysis, presentations, and email management.
 Collaboration: Enable multiple users to work together on documents and projects seamlessly.
 Standardization: Offer a standard set of tools that ensure compatibility and consistency across
different platforms and devices.
 Accessibility: Ensure that tools are accessible to users with different needs and abilities.

Advantages

 User-Friendly Interface: Intuitive design and layout make it easy for users to navigate and
utilize features.
 Wide Range of Applications: Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and
more, catering to diverse needs.
 Compatibility: Works across various operating systems and integrates well with other software
and services.
 Regular Updates: Frequent updates and improvements ensure the software remains current and
secure.
 Cloud Integration: With Office 365, users can store and access their documents from anywhere
with an internet connection.
 Collaboration Tools: Features like real-time co-authoring and Teams enhance teamwork and
communication.
Disadvantages

 Cost: Can be expensive, especially for business licenses and subscription plans.

1
 Complexity: Some users may find the extensive features overwhelming and challenging to
learn.
 Resource-Intensive: Requires significant system resources, which can be an issue for older
computers.
 Subscription Model: The move towards a subscription-based model (Office 365) may not
appeal to all users.
 Security Concerns: Being widely used makes it a common target for cyber-attacks, requiring
constant vigilance.

Types of Microsoft office

1. Microsoft Office 2019:

o A one-time purchase that includes classic versions of Office applications like
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for a single PC or Mac.
o Does not receive feature updates but gets security updates.
2. Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365):
o A subscription-based service offering the latest versions of Office applications
and additional services like OneDrive, Skype, and Microsoft Teams.
o Available in different plans for individuals, families, businesses, and educational
institutions.
3. Microsoft Office Online:
o Includes basic versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
o Limited features compared to desktop versions but useful for quick, on-the-go
tasks.
4. Microsoft Office Mobile:
o Mobile versions of Office applications for Android and iOS devices.
o Optimized for touch interfaces and includes essential features for document
creation and editing.
5. Microsoft Office Home & Student:
o A version aimed at home users and students, typically including Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, and OneNote.
o One-time purchase with no ongoing subscription fees.

Lab I

Question: Apply font name Arial with 10 font size first paragraph.

Software is a set of instructions, data or programs used to operate computers and execute specific tasks.
Software is the collection of computers programs, procedures and documentation that performs different
tasks on a computer system. It encompasses everything from operating systems, which manage the
hardware and basic functions of a computer, to application software, which allows users to carry out tasks
such as word processing, web browsing, and gaming. It is essential for the functioning of modern digital
devices, driving the operations of everything from personal computers and smartphones to industrial
machinery and complex network systems.

Question: Apply font name Calibri with 12 font size for second paragraph.
An operating system (OS) is a fundamental software that manages the hardware and software
resources of a computer system, providing a stable and consistent way for applications to
interact with the hardware without needing to know the intricate details of the hardware. It
handles essential tasks such as memory management, input/output operations, and file system
management. The OS acts as an intermediary between users and the computer hardware.
Common examples include Windows, Linux, and Android, each designed to optimize the
performance and usability of different types of computing devices.

Question: Apply font name Times New Roman with 14 font size for third
paragraph.
The Central Processing Unit (CPU), often referred to as the "brain" of a computer,
is a critical component responsible for executing instructions from computer
programs by performing basic arithmetic, logic, control, and input/output
operations. It interprets and processes instructions from the computer's memory,
performing operations sequentially and managing the flow of information through
the system. Modern CPUs are composed of multiple cores, allowing them to
perform multiple tasks simultaneously, which enhances performance and
efficiency. They are essential for the overall functionality of computing devices.

Lab II

Question: Create a document (must be 5 points in each bullet and numbering)

Computers are versatile and powerful devices that come with a wide range of features, making
them indispensable in various fields. Some of the key features of computers include:

 Speed: Computers can process data and execute instructions at incredibly high speeds,
measured in gigahertz (GHz).
 Accuracy: Computers perform tasks with a high degree of precision and reliability,
minimizing errors in data processing and computation.
 Storage Capacity: Computers can store vast amounts of data in various storage devices,
such as hard drives, solid-state drives, and cloud storage, ensuring easy access and retrieval
of information.
 Versatility: Computers can perform a wide range of tasks, from word processing and web
browsing to graphic design, programming, and data analysis.
 Automation: Computers can automate repetitive tasks through programming, reducing the
need for manual intervention and increasing efficiency.

An operating system (OS) performs a wide range of critical functions that are essential for the
operation of a computer. Some of the primary functions of an operating system include:

1. Process Management: The OS manages the execution of multiple processes, ensuring that
each process gets enough CPU time to function correctly.
2. Memory Management: The OS controls the allocation and deallocation of memory space
to various applications and processes.
3. File System Management: The OS manages files on different storage devices, handling
tasks such as file creation, deletion, reading, writing, and permissions.
4. Device Management: The OS controls and coordinates the use of hardware devices such
as printers, disks, keyboards, and displays.
5. User Interface: The OS provides a user interface, such as a graphical user interface (GUI)
or command-line interface (CLI), enabling users to interact with the computer system.
