ROUND 2
PROBLEM OF THE DAY

Two schools are to be merged into one school of 1000 students in which 42% will
be girls.
One of the schools has a 10% girls student population and the other school has a
90% girls student population.
Find the student population in each of the two schools.

SOLUTION:
Let the schools be A and B
Let school A have x students (1 Mark)
Then school B has (1000 – x) students (1 Mark)
For the totality of girls in the two schools, we have

0.1)x + (0.9)(1000 – x) = (0.42)(1,000) (2 Marks)

10x + 90(1000 –x) = 42,000
90,000 + 10x – 90x = 42000
80x = 90,000 – 42,000 = 4800 (2 Marks)
Hence x = 600 (2 Marks)
First school has 600 students (1 Mark)
The second school has (1000 – 600) = 400 students (1 Mark)
