Science Education Perceptions
1. What is science according to you? What do you think is the role of a science
teacher in a
school?
According to me science is an investigation to find the hidden truth and magic about this
mystic world and things in and around us.
My role is to create curiosity in learning science through experience and experiments and
make them ready to explore the world around them with scientific temper.
2. What according to you are the primary goals of Science education? How are you
trying to
achieve them in your classroom? Give an example using a topic.
1. Gaining the Knowledge: Knowing the base of existence of this world and natural
phenomenon around us.
2. How to learn science through systematic approach.
How to achieve
1. By inquiry, discovery, practical experience.
Example
1. Conducted practicals on acids and bases, Light, temperature and other topics
For students light is something which expel darkness but in real sense the light is an energy.
By understanding the experiments they are curious to see how mathematics and science are
collaborating in producing reflection of light.
2. Conducted an experiment on liquid and their behaviour students are puzzled to see how
different liquids in a glass forming different layers, why are they not mixing. This will allow
them to think and explore the science and behaviour of the liquids.
3.Has your perception of Science education changed over your teaching career?
How?
Yes. I am not teaching my students the way I have learnt the science. What I used to
imagine at their age, they are able to see it live in classroom. Technically they are getting
better day by day. So practically demonstration is the key to hold their attention and
enhance their knowledge in science.
Resources and Materials
4. What teaching-learning materials do you currently use in your science classes?
Can you
give an example where the TLM enhanced student participation/learning?
I Use Science Kit ILP for most of the topics related to physics and chemistry. For Botany and
zoology I use Digital Resources and plants, flowers, etc.
Example: Students used litmus papers to find the nature of fruits and other food ingredients
acidity or base.
Finding floating and sinking objects around them.
5. Can you give an example of a science topic that you taught recently using the
existing resources in your school?
Light
6. What challenges do you face in mobilising relevant resources like TLMs, digital
resources, etc for your science teaching?
1. We have one Smart TV that's most of the time busy as other teachers engage the learners
in other subjects.
2. ILP kit is handy we can carry easily from class to class.
Training and Professional Development
7. Which science specific trainings have you attended in the last 3 years?
1. I have attended only one Science workshop in the last 3 years which is held at KUPPAM
AGASTYA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION.
8. Have you found the science training so far received to be useful? Why or why
not?Describe the most valuable science training you've received. What were your
main takeaways from them?
Extremely useful and innovative. Hands on activities and ambience around the science
centre attractive.
Planning and execution are the key takeaways from the program.
9. Could you adopt your learnings from training in your classroom? Explain with an
example?
Yes, I do. Some of the interesting fun science activities were good I conducted them in my
classroom. Example Sound waves through light and balloon.
Challenges and Support
10. What are the challenges you face in teaching science?
1. Need to develop the learners ready for science knowledge and experiments.
2. Multiple subjects and mixed classrooms.
3. No science lab to maintain and develop a small science room.
11. What are the challenges students face in understanding science? How do you
address those challenges?
1. Literacy and Numeracy is the challenge to understand the higher level concepts.
2. They enjoy the science activities but miss the logic behind them. Needs more explanation
to make them understand.
3. Science vocabulary is new to them and we highlight those words so that they use in their
communication.
Innovative Practices
12. List the innovative practices followed in your classroom and beyond the
classroom to create interest in science learning
1. Questions and answer sessions
2. Science diagrams
3. Practicals
4. Presentation of a science activity.
Recommendation
13. What are the support systems and resources that you feel would significantly
improve your teaching and student learning?
1. New age science resources, digital learning tools like computer and smart TV
14. How can future training programs be improved ?Give 3 suggestions.
Hands on experiments, resources and interaction with science teachers and guests.
